Escambia County’s high school and middle school softball teams opened their seasons on Tuesday with a trip to East Brewton to face W.S. Neal.

The ECMS Lady Eagles kicked off the season with on a sour note falling 7-6 to the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles, while the ECHS Lady Blue Devils opened their season with an upset over Neal 5-4.

 

WSNMS Lady Eagles 7, Atmore 6

After scoring six runs in the first inning Tuesday, the Lady Eagles had to hang on for a one-run win over Atmore, 7-6.

Leading 6-1 after the first inning, Atmore scored one run in the second and third innings to cut the lead to 6-3. After the Lady Eagles took a 7-3 lead into the fourth inning, Atmore scored three runs to cut the lead to 7-6 but the Lady Eagles were able to hang on for the win.

W.S. Neal had no hits in the win but benefited from 10 walks and two hit batters.

Maddisen Winchester, Tori Wyatt, Karissa Johnson, Haleigh Dubose, Erin Hartzel, and Lacy Campbell all scored in the win for the Lady Eagles.

Dubose pitched and earned the win on the mound. Dubose went four innings allowing two hits, six runs, one earned, walked seven and struck out four.

 

Atmore 5, WSN Lady Eagles 4

In their first game of the season Tuesday at home, the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles were stunned by Atmore 5-4 to start their season 0-1.

Both teams scored two runs each in the first inning and W.S. Neal took a 3-2 lead in the second.

In the top of the fourth, Atmore plated three runs to take a 5-3 lead over the Lady Eagles. W.S. Neal would cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth but was held scoreless the remainder of the game to take the loss.

Kaitlin Hadaway took the loss on the mound for the Lady Eagles as she went seven innings and allowed three hits, five runs, two earned, walked nine, hit one and struck out 16.

Paige Grantham was 1-for-2 with a double and KeKe Floyd was 1-for-4 with one RBI.
