Cougars looking for success on court in 2013

January could be an interesting month for both the boys and girls basketball teams at Escambia Academy.
Both teams have started 9-2 this season, but will reach the meat of their schedules this month with games against region foes Fort Dale Academy, Monroe Academy and Morgan Academy.
Boys’ coach Kevin Woods hopes to get some players back from injuries in time for these games.
Jordan Sasser, who broke his wrist earlier this season, should be back this week, while Tehran Stallworth is about “85 to 90 percent” on a sprained ankle. A key player from the bench, Scott Brantley, will be out for four weeks due to injury.
The boys’ team is coming off a trip to the Alabama Independent Schools Association final four last year.
The girls’ team didn’t make the state tournament last year, but has gained a year’s more experience and can make a run this year with a strong showing this month.
“It’s going to be really important to win our region,” said coach David Walker.
The Lady Cougars are returning four starters from last year’s team and they are working hard, Walker said.
“I’ve been really pleased with the season,” he said. “I can’t complain about the effort. They play hard every game.”
The EA boys and girls will hit the court next on Monday, taking on the Monroe Academy Volunteers at home in Canoe. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
