For its final tune up before the regular season begins, the Escambia County Blue Devils’ basketball team will take on a team made up of former players.

The contest dubbed the “legends” game is slated for Thursday at 2 p.m. in the ECHS gym.

The “legends” team consists of Fred Knight, Layton Knight, Terrance McNeil, Terrell McNeil, Kendrick Henderson, Tyrell Ford, Albert Dortch and DeAndreas Johnson.

“I’ve always done it,” ECHS basketball coach Earlando Courtney said of the preseason exhibition. “It used to be players versus a faculty team.”

Courtney said the challenge from the “legends” will be tough as “every one of them has played college ball.”

“It’s great for us,” he said. “It gives us big bodies to go up against.”

Courtney added that the team of former players have good instincts on the court and know the game, which will be good practice for his team’s defense.

“When I’m watching them, I’m surprised Atmore doesn’t have more championship banners hanging up,” he said.

Although it’s during school hours, the event is open to the public, Courtney said. Admission is $2 for students and $3 for adults with the proceeds benefiting the ECHS basketball program.
