County tourney begins Thursday

The Escambia County High School boys and girls basketball teams will try to defend last year’s county championships, starting Friday at the 2014 Escambia County Tournament.

ECHS won the girls title last year, and the Blue Devils won the boys title for the sixth straight year. This year’s tournament will be at T.R. Miller gymnasium in Brewton. Games will be played on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with game times set to begin at 3 p.m. each day, as well as games scheduled for 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

W.S. Neal will open the girls tournament Thursday, playing ECHS at 3 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., W.S. Neal will open the boys tournament by facing ECHS. ECHS will be the home team in both games.

The complete tournament schedule is as follows:

• Thursday, 6 p.m. — T.R. Miller girls vs. Flomaton girls.

• Thursday, 7:30 p.m. — T.R. Miller boys vs. Flomaton boys.

• Friday, 3 p.m. — ECHS girls vs. Flomaton girls.

• Friday, 4:30 p.m. — ECHS boys vs. Flomaton boys.

• Friday, 6 p.m. — T.R. Miller girls vs. W.S. Neal girls.

• Friday, 7:30 p.m. — T.R. Miller boys vs. W.S. Neal boys.

• Saturday, 3 p.m. — Flomaton girls vs. W.S. Neal girls.

• Saturday, 4:30 p.m. — Flomaton boys vs. W.S. Neal boys.

• Saturday, 6 p.m. — ECHS girls vs. T.R. Miller girls.

• Saturday, 7:30 p.m. — ECHS boys vs. T.R. Miller boys.

In the case of a tie, the tiebreakers will be — in order — head-to-head play, points allowed, points scored, or a coin flip.

A first-place trophy will be awarded to the first-place girls and boys teams. Awards will be given to those players who make the all-tournament team. Each member of the team will be selected by his or her coach.

The first-place team in the boys and girls brackets will have two members on the all-county team, plus the Most Valuable Player. The second-place team will have two members, and the third- and fourth-place teams will have one member each.

Awards will be handed out after the last game of the tournament on Saturday. Admission is $7.
