Four members of the Escambia Academy Cougars football team were named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s (ASWA) All-State team earlier this month.

Those four players were named to the AISA All-State team. The ASWA only chooses one team from the AISA, with players in all three classifications.
EA was the AISA Class AAA champion in 2014.

Three of the Cougars were named first team all-state. They included offensive lineman James Fuqua, defensive lineman Garrett Kirk and defensive back Kris Brown.

Brown and Kirk also contributed on offense for the Cougars in 2014. Brown, a running back, finished with 1,008 rushing yards on 106 attempts, as well as 16 touchdowns.

Kirk played tight end, finishing with four catches for 16 yards, and two two-point conversions.

Offensive lineman Garrett Nesmith was chosen as a second team all-state selection.

With the addition of Class 7A, the ASWA changed the format for its All-State team this year, adding a second team and limiting honorable mentions to no more than two at each position. In mid-November, the panel held a preliminary vote in order to pare down the field at the all-state meeting.

The winners of the state’s back and lineman of the year in each class will be announced at the annual Player of the Year banquet, to be held in Montgomery on Jan. 14, 2015.
