The Chiefs are focusing on themselves as VHS comes to town for a regular-season contest this week.

“First of all, they’re a bigger class school for Mississippi and have traditionally a good football program over there,” NHS head football coach Sid Wheatley said. “We can’t worry about other people right now. We’ve got to worry about ourselves.”

The Chiefs are coming off of two weeks of losses to Gulf Breeze and Chipley.

Wheatley said the coaching staff is going to put together a clear game plan for the team.

“We’re going to be very clear on what schemes we have to do on offense,” he said. “I think we’ve been trying to do a little too much. We’ve just got to continue to be better tacklers on defense. We missed a couple of tackles on defense last week.”

For a game like this, Wheatley said ramping up practice each day will be a must.

“This week is going to be fast paced,” he said. “I’m going to be very energetic and we’re going to really be positive with the guys.”

Wheatley said even though the schedule has been tough so far, the team is excited about the game this week.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” he said about the schedule. “We welcome a challenge and we will work to get better and have a good game on Friday night.”
