Blue Devils to meet UMS-Wright Friday

Escambia County will be taking on a juggernaut in UMS-Wright this week at home to start region play.

The Blue Devils are coming off a 24-16 win over Wilcox Central, which started their season on a good note.

UMS beat Charles Henderson 32-31 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy on a late field goal.

“I was telling my principal (Dennis Fuqua) (Monday) morning that if you could watch a film of a game from Friday night and pull a film from 10 years ago, and watch it, you’d think you were watching the same team,” ECHS head football coach Royce Young said about UMS. “Physically, they look the same every year. They play so disciplined and mistake free. They’re not going to do anything to defeat themselves.

“They’re like a machine,” he said. “They do everything right.”

Young said the Blue Devils will need to play well enough to eliminate turnovers and lessen penalties against the Bulldogs.

Players and situations to look out for on UMS-Wright are Ty Rocconi, a senior running back; both quarterbacks; and the interchange of players on offense and defense.
