Cecil McGhee

Mr. Cecil McGhee, 82, passed away on Wed., Nov. 30, 2016, in Atmore.

He was a native of Nokomis, former resident of Gadsden (15 years) and has resided in Atmore since 1996. He was retired from Goodyear Tire Company and was of the Protestant Faith.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Louise Turner.

He is survived his wife, Betty McGhee of Atmore; two sons, Cecil Gwinn McGhee of Nokomis and Mark Steven McGhee of Atmore; two daughters, Sharon Denise (Randall) Hammette of Altoona and Sylvia Beth (Chris) Holloman of Altoona; four brothers, Norvie Lee McGhee Jr. of Gadsden, Douglas McGhee of Spanish Fort, Ronnie McGhee of Atmore and Huey McGhee of Zion, Ill.; three sisters, Eloise Ramer of Gadsden, Betty Jean McVay of Booneville, Miss. and Hazel Albritton of Atmore; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sat., Dec. 3, 2016, from the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Ward and Bro. Colton Penrod officiating.

Burial followed at the Antioch Cemetery.

Visitation was held Dec. 2 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Rodney McVay, Tim Albritton, Jeremy McGhee, Matthew McGhee, Clint Ramer and Brian McGhee.

Honorary pallbearers were Olin Albritton, Allen Turner, Edward Turner, Eddie Ramer, Wyndel Ramer, Sammy McVay, Gary McVay, Jeffery McVay, Michael McGhee, Jason McGhee and Tashon Johnson (great grandson).

Donnie Marvin Nordstrom

Donnie Marvin Nordstrom, 80, of Frisco City, passed away Sat., Nov. 26, 2016, in Monroeville.

He was a Forester with the Alabama State Forestry Commission and served in the Army National Guard. He was born in Atmore on Sept. 30, 1936, to the late J.E. and Elsie Lorenz Nordstrom.

He was a member and deacon of McCullough Christian Center, and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Sybil U. Nordstrom; son, Gary Nordstrom; brothers, Bernard Nordstrom and Edwin Nordstrom; and a sister, Ione Young.

He is survived by two daughters, Donna (Ronnie) Jordan of Excel and Amy (Chris) Betsole of Red Oak; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Mon., Nov. 28, 2016, from McCullough Christian Center with Bro. Cornelius Phillips officiating. Interment followed in McCullough Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Larry Caraway, Eugene Caraway, Scott Saucer, Tommy Smith and Tad McMullen. Honorary pallbearers were Marlyn Mack and Phillip Wilson.

Family received friends Monday Nov. 28, 2016 at the McCullough Christian Center.

 

James Dread

Funeral services for Mr. James Lee Dread, 69, of Mobile, formerly of Atmore, will be announced by Turner Funeral Chapel LLC.
Mr. Dread died Fri., Dec. 2, 2016, at USA Medical Center in Mobile.

 

James Foster Anderson

James Foster Anderson, 69, passed away on Nov. 29, 2016.

He was born at Mobile Infirmary on June 7, 1947, to the late L.D. and Mirtis B. Anderson.

He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree from the business school. While at Alabama, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He joined the Air force R.O.T.C. in 1967 and was a reservist until 1972.

He spent 30 years with the conservation department in Alabama serving in many roles in several state parks. He worked at Gulf state park, Cheaha, Roland Cooper and Lakepoint. After retiring from the state, he worked with the sheriff’s department in Escambia County, Ala. for five years. He subsequently went to work with the Poarch Creek Indians as a tribal police officer for another five years. Spending 40 years as a police officer, he had a strong sense of duty, honor and fairness for life. He enjoyed turkey hunting, fishing and carpentry.

He is survived by his wife, Dy-Ana Anderson; son, James Foster Anderson II; his brother, Daulton Anderson; nephews; Jeff Anderson, David Anderson; and niece, Kristen Kaiser.

Funeral Services were held Dec. 3, 2016, from the First Baptist Church of Atmore with the Rev. Arnold Hendrix officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers were Gary Elmore, Hugh Elmore, Butch Black, David Anderson, Brandon Smith and Julian Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be James Norris and Bobby Davis and Don Cooley.

Visitation was held Dec. 3, 2016 from the First Baptist Church of Atmore.

In lieu of flowers, please give donations to Shriner’s Hospital, St. Jude Hospital or Atmore Community Hospital.

Joseph Floyd Boutwell Jr.

Joseph Floyd Boutwell, Jr., 58, of Atmore, passed away Thurs., Dec. 1, 2016, in Atmore.

He was employed many years with Brantley’s Tires, born in Perdido on Feb. 7, 1958 to the late Joseph Floyd and Cathleen Weaver Boutwell Sr.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Boutwell; and a brother, Robert Boutwell.

Survivors are his children, Jeffery Richardson, Emily Boutwell, John (Mandy) Salter and Joseph (Autumn Harrison) Boutwell III, all of Huxford, Robbie (Nickie) Tuberville of Monroeville and Joie Lynn Vickery of Bay Minette; three brothers, Jessie (Debbie) Boutwell of Flomaton,  Destry Boutwell and Rodney (Rhonda) Boutwell all of Perdido; two sisters, Janie Dorriety of Lottie and Bernice (Lamar) Hadley of Perdido; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held Dec. 5, 2016 from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel, with Sister Helen Stewart officiating. Interment followed in McCullough Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers were Jaylon “Ty” Weaver, Toby Boutwell, Mitch Hayles, Charles Williams,

Lamar Hadley and Steve Emmons.

Lester Stokes

Mr. Lester Stokes, 97, passed away on Wed., Nov. 30, 2016, in Jay, Fla.

He was a native of Chancellor and a resident of Jay for the past 90 years. He was in the Bridge Club.

He is preceded in death by his step-daughter, Gina Bethea; parents, Henry and Evie Stokes; and wife, Bessie Stokes.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Stokes of Jay; one step-daughter, Denise (Matthew) Martin of Jay; one step-son, Darrell (Courtney) Campbell of Jay; and numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and cousins.

Funeral services were held Dec. 4 from the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Richard Ash officiating.

Burial followed at the Cora Cemetery.

Visitation was held Dec.4, 2016 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

Mary “Alice” Merchant

Mrs. Mary “Alice” Merchant, 68, passed away on Wed., Nov. 30, 2016, in Century, Fla.

She was a native and life-long resident of Christian Home, Fla. She was a member of the Christian Home Freewill Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Steve Merchant; son, Tony Merchant; parents, Karl and Sarah Victor; two grandchildren, Steven Still and Jackson Still; sister, Kathy Hall; and niece, Angel Hall.

She is survived by her three sons, Ronnie (Rosie) Merchant of Jay, Fla., Erik (Libby) Merchant of Franklin and Nathan Merchant of Christian Home, Fla.; one daughter, Renee (John Still) Merchant of McCullough; four brothers, Phillip Victor of Christian Home, Fla., Johnny Victor of Flomaton, Jimmy Victor of Bratt, Fla. and Donnie (Sandra) Victor of Wawbeek; two sisters, Faye Victor of Christian Home, Fla. and Janie (Billy) Criswell of Christian Home; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 5, 2016, at the Christian Home Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Alfred Long and the Rev. Josh Long officiating.

Visitation was held Dec. 5 at the Christian Home Freewill Baptist Church.

Burial followed at the Christian Home Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Timothy Victor, J.C. Victor, Jay Young, Michael Merchant, Josh Merchant and Hayden Thrower.

Honorary pallbearers were Jason Victor, James Victor, John Victor and Tyler Cofield.

Ralph Lee Cooley Jr.

Ralph Lee Cooley Jr. was born in Sevierville, Tenn., on April 2, 1940. He served 23 years in the Army of which he retired as SFC. He lived in Fort Rucker in 1977 until he moved in 1982 to Huxford to open Lou’s Grocery in 1984.

He is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Lee Cooley Sr.; his mother, Anna R. Sellers; his sister, Betty Poulin; his daughter, Evelyn LeAnna (Lee) Cooley-Owens; and his grandson, Blake Michael-Allen Turner.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lou Cooley of Huxford; son, Ralph Dwayne Cooley (Beth) of Wilkesboro, N.C.; daughter, Michele Turner (Allen) of Huxford; granddaughter, Heather Lou Hagen of Huxford; grandson, Hayden Eugene Cooley of Gulf Shores; granddaughter, Allisar Cherrie Womack of Robertsdale; grandson, Josh Turner (Brooke) of Spanish Fort; grandson, Josh Owens of Excel; granddaughter, Tammy Vaczy of Excel; granddaughter, Clara Muse of Huxford; his great-grandchildren Kym, Emma, DJ, Blake, Raymond, Noah, Cynthia, Emma Catherine, Lizzie, Ford, Ellie, Mcghee, Karley and Lexi; and one great-great grandson, Ashton.

Funeral services were held Dec. 1 from the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Daniels officiating.

Burial followed at the Huxford Baptist Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Visitation was held Dec. 1 from the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Dwayne Cooley, Allen Turner, Hayden Cooley, Josh Turner, Jason Victor and Buddy Godwin.

Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Stokes, Coop Wall, Mike Beech, Paul Thomas, Gerald Palmer and Mike Jay.

Robert Jarrod Peebles

Robert Jarrod Peebles was born Aug.10, 1979, in Atmore and passed away suddenly Dec. 3, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Peebles; maternal grandparents, Bobby and Joyce Benefield; and paternal grandfather, Wilborn Peebles.

Survivors include his wife Jean Peebles; three daughters, Gabbie, Dakota and Becca, and Tori Grammer, who was like a daughter to him; his father and stepmother, Ricky and Becka Peebles; his brother, Jason and Jennifer Peebles; his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Peebles; and many aunts and uncles; and a host of other close family members and friends.

Jarrod was very active in youth sports with NWE little league and softball, Earnest Ward football and loved sharing the outdoors with his children and younger cousins.

Funeral services will be held today Wed., Dec. 7, 2016, at noon from the Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Stotts and the Rev. Delbert Redditt officiating.

Burial will follow at the Godwin Cemetery.

Visitation was held Dec. 6 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Nick Harper, Dustin Harper, Tim Kast, Nooch Segers, Josh Edwards and Tristen Segers.

Honorary pallbearers were Coy Peebles, Brian Burkett, Johnny Green and Brett Roberson.

Thelma Lee Craddock

Thelma Lee Craddock, 90, of Atmore  passed away Tuesday Nov. 29, 2016 in Atmore.

She was employed by Vanity Fair Mills as a trainer, born in Canoe on Feb. 2, 1926, to the late William Wesley and Elna Bristow Lee. She was a member of Presley Street Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by husbands, Thomas “Tom” Turk and Jack C. Craddock; grandson, Ryan Jones; and son in law, Chuck  Jones.

Survivors are one son, William Thomas “Tommy” (Becky) Turk of Robertsdale; two daughters,

Annette Jones of Stockton and Carolyn (Mike) Fisher of Elberta; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Dec.1, 2016, from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mike Grindle officiating. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jim Harrison, Glendon Harrison, Dustin Harrison, Matthew Ryan and John Knight. Honorary pallbearers were Charlotte Smith, Christie Singleton, Marsha Green, Patty Booth and staff at The Meadows.

Family received friends Dec. 1 at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.
