Escambia County principal Dennis Fuqua delivered on his bet with the Blue Devils football team on Monday.

Fuqua bet the team that if it beat T.R. Miller in a jamboree last Friday night, then he’d shave the Blue Devils’ logo on his head.

The Blue Devils delivered on their bet, defeating the Tigers 16-7 during the varsity portion of the game. The junior varsity also won, 6-0, in the second half.

“We treated it as a real game for a half and a possession,” Head football coach Rico Jackson said. “I was more proud of how they competed. T.R. Miller scored first, but we just kept playing and competed hard.”

Escambia County’s Malik Brown ran back a kick off more than 80 yards in the first quarter, and quarterback Jordaun Patterson found JaBryce Hooks for a 12-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Jackson said the boys played hard, and were physical.

“I really think that if we compete and play hard, that we’ll have a pretty good football team,” he said. “We’ll have to do that every week. We’ll have to practice like that every week.”

A big part of the win last week was the Blue Devils’ line play on both sides of the ball.

“Those guys did a great job,” Jackson said. “The offensive line did a great job, but we’ve still got some stuff to clean up. Coach (Devin) Crawford does a great job with them.”

This week, the Blue Devils will begin their regular season in a road contest against Wilcox Central in Camden. ECHS beat WCHS last season, 8-0, in a close contest at home.

“It’s a long road trip,” Jackson said about the drive. “They have a lot of athletes. I know they lost a lot of seniors. It’s like they have reloaded.”

Wilcox is a Class 5A team and the Blue Devils are going to have to play well, Jackson said.

Additionally, Jackson said the jamboree win over TRM gave a big boost in momentum to the football team.

Kick off Friday is at 7 p.m.
