Escambia Academy’s Keller Coston accounted for three touchdowns to help lead the Cougars to a 23-7 victory over Valiant Cross on Aug. 25.

Coston connected with Quinton Odom on a fourth-down touchdown pass; hit Luke Bell for another TD; and ran one in from about 75 yards in the win.

EA head football coach Gex Billups said the game was played at Alabama State’s practice field.

“We just want to thank them for letting us use their facilities,” Billups said. “We came out pretty sluggish there in the first half. Defensively, we stepped up and played well. We made some halftime adjustments and came out with a little fire under us.”
Billups said in addition to Coston’s day, the defense caused a safety.

This week, the Cougars will play Clarke Prep to start AISA Class 2A, Region 2 action. The game was moved to tomorrow night, Thurs., Aug. 31, because of a lack of officials.

Billups said they both have two games under their belt so far in the season.

“We should’ve gotten all of the kinks worked out on both sides of the ball,” he said. “They’re a good team, and well coached.”

Billups said his team will have a chip on its shoulder given what happened last year. Last season, EA lost 49-20.

“They had a good team last year,” he said. “We can’t wait to play coach (Ashley) Carlisle and his kids. He’s done a great job over there.”

Billups said winning the special teams battle and running the ball are two keys for the game.

Kick off tomorrow night is at 7 on Bachelor Field.
