Escambia County’s Jamarion Robinson threw three touchdowns to help lead the Blue Devils to a 26-14 victory over Northview tonight at Herbert Barnes Field in Atmore.

Robinson threw scoring throws from 67, 53 and 20 yards in the win.

Escambia County head football coach Vincent Harris said the players were motivated.

“We got beat last year 57-14, and they didn’t forget it,” Harris said. “They came out and played hard, both offense and defense. The defense played lights out, especially in the second half.”

Robinson connected with Lorenzo Arnold on the 67 yarder with 11:43 left in the first quarter, and then hit Elijah Thomas on the 53-yard scoring pass with more than 11 minutes later.

Trailing 14-0 going into the second quarter, the Chiefs cut the lead in half on a 27-yard scoring run from Devin Kelly.

Both teams exchanged turnovers later in the second quarter, and ECHS led 14-7 at the break.

After the break, the Chiefs put together a good opening drive in the third quarter, which was end capped by a 30-yard touchdown rush from Wyatt Scruggs at the 8:12 mark. With the extra point attempt, the game was notched at 14-14.

Later in the period, the Blue Devils recovered a fumble with 4:23 on the clock, and the Chiefs’ pass coverage stepped up big in the end zone to cause a fourth down, however.

On fourth-and-10, Robinson found Arnold on his final touchdown pass of the night more than a minute later. With the missed extra point, ECHS led 20-14.

The final score of the game came with 10.3 seconds left in the third quarter.

ECHS senior defensive tackle Xavier McMillan ran it back 20 yards for a touchdown on a turnover to put the game out of reach.

In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs mounted a late charge, never giving up.

NHS head football coach Wes Summerford said too many mistakes were made.

“I just think we gave them too many opportunities on offense,” Summerford said. “Our defense was on the field all night. We turned the ball over. We’ve done that two games in a row. You can’t make those kind of mistakes. We played two good football games, and you can’t do that. We’re going to have to fix it.”

When asked what the Chiefs can take from this game moving forward, Summerford said the little things from the contest.

“We’ll get better at that,” he said. “We’ve got a young group. We’ve got some young guys playing, and we’ve got to grow up in a hurry. It’s going to take some games under our belt, but we’ll get better.”

With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 2-0 overall, and will face Satsuma next Friday night on the road to start Class 4A, Region 1 play. NHS visits Tate, Fla. next Thurs., Sept. 7.

Harris said everyone made it through the game unscathed, and he was proud of the team’s resiliency, especially when they bounced back after the game tied.

“It’s a different Atmore,” he said. “We’re resilient. I’m proud to be a Blue Devil.“

Prior to tonight’s game, a Gun Violence Awareness ceremony was held.

After a prayer, orange-colored balloons were released by family and friends of victims.
