The ECHS Blue Devils’ baseball team ended its season on a high note Friday with a sweep of Vigor High School.

The Blue Devils beat the Wolves 19-9 in six innings in game one and 18-7 in five innings in game two to pick up their seventh and eighth wins of the season.

ECHS pitcher Anthony Morris held the Wolves scoreless in the top of the first inning.

Dandrez McCarthy singled to start things off for the Blue Devils in the bottom of the inning. With Gage White up to bat, McCarthy stole second. White then bunted to move McCarthy to third. Anthony Matthews then singled to score McCarthy and give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.

Justin Davis hit a triple to score Matthews from first for a 2-0 ECHS lead. Davis then scored on a passed ball. Malcolm Black and Tyler Sanspree both struck out to end the inning.

After a pop out gave the Blue Devils’ defense its first out of the inning, Matthews walked a batter before that batter stole second and moved to third on a throwing error.

Vigor scored its first run on a fielders’ choice during the next at-bat. Matthews struck out the last batter of the inning.

David Johnson beat out a throw to first for a single to start the bottom of the second. Johnson stole second before Morris scored him with a double to give ECHS a 4-1 lead.

Imani Gray singled to score Morris during the next at-bat to give the Blue Devils a 5-1 lead. Gray stole second and scored on a single by McCarthy. McCarthy took second on an error. ECHS took a 6-1 lead. McCarthy scored on an error to make it 7-1.

White singled and Matthews struck out for the team’s first out. White stole second before Davis was thrown out at first. White scored on an error to make it 8-1.

Malcolm Black flew out to end the inning.

The Wolves scored five runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Devils’ lead to 8-6.

After a Sanspree fly out, Johnson singled, but Nytorious Cooler – with a strike out – and Gray stranded him to end the inning.

Vigor scored two runs quickly in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 8 apiece. Two ECHS errors and a double led to the quick scores.

With two out in the inning, a Vigor runner was tagged out while trying to advance to third and ended the threat.

McCarthy was walked and White struck out to begin the bottom of the fourth. Singles by Matthews and Davis drove in McCarthy to give ECHS a 9-8 lead.

A Black triple during the next at-bat scored Davis to give the Blue Devils a 10-8 lead. Black then scored on an error from third for the 11-8 lead. Sanspree struck out to end the frame.

With ECHS still leading 10-8 in the bottom of the fifth, Cooler walked and Gray singled to put the Blue Devils in business. A McCarthy single during the next at-bat scored both runners to give ECHS a 13-8 lead.

McCarthy stole third before Matthews hit a single to score him for the 14-8 lead. Matthews was thrown out at first on a steal attempt during the next at-bat and frame ended.

Vigor scored its final run of the game in the next frame, cutting the Blue Devils’ lead to 14-9.

Davis singled to start things off for ECHS in the bottom of the sixth. Black singled during the next at-bat to move Davis to third. Davis scored during the next at-bat and ECHS took a 15-9 lead.

Black scored during the next at-bat to give ECHS a 16-9 lead. Sanspree walked, stole second, stole third and scored on an error to give ECHS a 17-9 lead. Johnson struck out.

Cooler singled during the next at-bat and stole second. He took third base on an error and scored to make it 18-9.

McCarthy singled and stole second. White singled during the next at-bat to score McCarthy and end the game at 19-9.

ECHS dominated game two of the doubleheader with an 18-7 win.

The Blue Devils only led 7-6 after the third inning, but went on a scoring spurt after that to end the game. Sanspree got the win from the mound. White led the team with four RBIs, Anthony Morris had two. Seven players scored two runs each in the win.
