Some $35,000 in upgrades to the Freemanville Water System may soon be funded.

On Monday, the Escambia County Commission approved the necessary items for the state Department of Community Affairs block development program.

Areas impacted include Freemanville Drive, Nelson Lane, and Jacks Springs Road to the interstate, said Stacey McKean of Grant Management in Fairhope.

“These lines were installed 40 years ago and were undersized at the time,” McKean said. “There have been numerous issues because of the age and sizes of the lines.”

If funded, the project will see 2-inch and 3-inch lines replaced with 6-inch lines, the installation of fire hydrants and a reconfiguration of dead lines.

“At the end, there will be a system-wide benefit,” McKean said.

The water system has committed $35,000 in matching funds for the project, she said.

A decision should be known by September, and if funded, work could begin in early 2016, she said.
