Escambia County’s Triston Knott scored 40 points, including a couple clutch 3-pointers in extra time to help lead the Blue Devils to a 95-90 triple overtime victory over Fairhope tonight in a loud Cornell Torrence Gymnasium.

Knott hit a trey and made two crucial free throws to keep ECHS in the game in the first overtime period, cut Fairhope’s lead to within one at 81-80 on two 3-pointers from the arch within 15 seconds of each other and made some much-needed buckets in the third overtime to give his team a lead it wouldn’t let go.

“Triston Knott has been playing at a high level,” ECHS boys basketball coach Erin Straughn said. “You always want to feed our high-level guys.”

Straughn said he saw Knott’s mentality toward the game Monday night and rolled with him for the clutch shots.

“He wasn’t gong for the shot, he was also attacking the basket,” Straughn said.

Straughn said he told his guys to put everything aside and play hard in the overtime periods.

“I told them that we’ve got a (Thanksgiving) break and leave it all on the floor,” he said. “We found a way to get some stops. We worked on it but we can still get a lot better.”

Fairhope, a Class 7A school, used its rebounding, quick transition and excellent shot-making to stay in the game. The Pirates led in the first two overtimes, and had their best chance to win in the second extra period.

What led to overtime started back with a little more than 4 minutes remaining in regulation.

ECHS held a 58-48 lead, but after a timeout by FHS, the Pirates then went on a 10-0 run to even the playing field.

The Blue Devils got a bit stop by Chillé Ford, who blocked a Tevin Brown dunk. Brown was fouled and made his first of two from the line. The Pirates led 59-58 with 1:21 left in the fourth.

Trailing 60-58, Straughn called a timeout to set up the next play.

Devon Robinson, who finished the game with 26 points, drained a short-range jumper to send the game into overtime.

The game went back and forth in overtime with six of Fairhope’s players fouling out.

ECHS led 37-25 at the break, and 55-40 after the third period.

Brown led Fairhope with 34 points. Benton Gambino chipped in 23 points, and Michael Shelby had 7.

“We kept battling,” FHS boys basketball coach Spencer Segrest said. “They’re a well-coached team. He had his guys playing tough and well. When you had six guys foul out, it’s tough.”
