A funeral service for newborn Baby Hixon will be announced by Turner Funeral Chapel LLC.

Baby Hixon died on Sat., Jan. 27, 2018, at D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton.

 

Jacqueline Dukes

Mrs. Jacqueline Dukes, 69, of Atmore (Freemanville Community), answered the Master’s Call on Sat., Jan. 26, 2018, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope.

A native of Atmore, Mrs. Dukes was a member of The House of God Pillar of the Truth Church, where she had been a deaconess and the church treasurer. She was a 1967 graduate of Escambia County Training School. She loved flowers and enjoyed fishing and was a housewife.

Those left to cherish memories of her life are her husband, George Dukes of Atmore; a daughter, Hazel (Kenneth) Bright of Brewton; two sons, Gary Barnes and Kendrell Dukes, both of Atmore; two sisters, Lula Banks of Atmore and Melanie (Bishop Maurice) Etheridge of Century, Fla.; four brothers, Robert (Willie) Salter of Los Angeles, Calif., Jessie Salter and Kenny (Susie) Salter, all of Atmore, and Glenn Young of Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral service will be this Sat., Feb. 3, 2018, at 1 p.m. at The House of God Pillar Ground of Truth Holiness Church with the Rev. Shirley Dean, pastor, and Bishop Maurice Etheride, eulogist. Inhumation will be in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Fri., Feb. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. Her body will lie in repose at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service with Turner Funeral Chapel LLC directing.

 

Donald Joseph Byrd

Mr. Donald Joseph Byrd, 79, passed away on Thurs., Jan. 25, 2018, in Pensacola, Fla.
He was a native and former resident of Pensacola, Fla. and has resided in Century, Fla. for the past 10 years. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Palomino Horse Breeders Association. He was a member of the Atmore First Assembly of God Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John F. Byrd and Dixie Glass.
Survivors include his wife Sue Byrd of Century; three sons, Brian (Candice) Byrd of Cantonment, Fla., Randy Blackwell of Pensacola, Fla. and Chad Blackwell of Mobile; one daughter, Casey Blackwell of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, John Byrd of Cantonment, Fla. and Bob (Bobbie Jean) Newell of Chipley, Fla. and four grandchildren, Aidan Byrd, Katie Lynn Byrd, Brandon Moerler and Dustin Moerler.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 30, 2018, from the Atmore First Assembly of God Church with Bro. Don Davis officiating.
Burial followed at Serenity Garden Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Jan. 30 at the Atmore First Assembly of God Church.
Pallbearers were Winston Bryan, Robert Kriss, Danny Wilson, Johnny Harrell, Raymond Peebles, Wayne Harris, Michael Roley and Richard Keesler.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Assembly of God Missions Team of Atmore.

Robert Earl Tolbert Sr.

Mr. Robert Earl Tolbert, Sr., 80, passed away on Sun., Jan. 28, 2018, in Pensacola, Fla.

He was a native of Evergreen, former resident of Jay, Fla. and has resided in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. for the past two years. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and was a member of the Poplar Dell Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Pauline Tolbert; parents, Ed and Ethel Tolbert; four brothers Bill, John, Franklin and Chester Tolbert; and three sisters, Irene Barlow, Gladys Smith and Estelle Ates.

He is survived by his two sons, Robert E. (Patricia) Tolbert Jr. of Jay and Freddie (Karen) Tolbert of Santa Rosa Beach; one daughter, Brenda (Jimmy) Gallagher of Winnsboro, La.; three sisters, Rose Richardson of Flomaton, Sara Weaver of Pensacola and Abbie Smith of Flomaton; two grandchildren, Brian Kelly and Brandy Ferrington; and two great-grandchildren, Aaron Ferrington and Katelyn Ferrington.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wed., Jan. 31, 2018, from the Poplar Dell Baptist Church with the Rev. Mitch Herring and the Rev. Willie Oglesbee officiating.

Burial will follow at the Poplar Dell Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until the 2 p.m. service time today, Jan. 31, at the Poplar Dell Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Nowling, Richard Jara, Jerry Kirkland, James Kirkland, Heath Owens and Darrell Salter.

Marcelete Maxine Harris

Marcelete Maxine Harris, 101, passed away on Mon., Jan. 22, 2018.

She was a faithful and devoted member of the Greater Mt. Triumph Baptist church in Atmore for over 90 years until she relocated to Houston, Texas. She earned a teacher’s diploma in 1937 from Alabama State Teachers College. She later returned to college and earned her Bacherlors of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1946.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and brothers, Lula (Earnest) Hunter, Gus (Madeline) Hollis, Minnie (Wilbert) Ellis, Blanche (Bryant) Nathaniel, Pauline (Willie) Jones, Nellie (Wick) Lockridge, John Hollis, Alice Hollis, Henry (Marjorie) Hollis and Gertrude (Eugene) Robinson; and sister in law, Mary Hollis.

She leaves to cherish her memories son, Steven (Linda); esteemed daughters, Patricia (Wayne) Luckett and Rosiland (Jerrold) McRae; brother, Steven Theophilus Hollis; grandchildren, Steven, Chad (Erin), Kirbi (Lanny), Warren, Brandon and Earl; great-granddaughter, Arianna; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and special life long friends.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 29, from Greater Mt. Triumph Baptist Church in Atmore. Interment was held in Stallworth cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steven Harris, Brandon Luckett, Chad Harris, Earl Thomas, Warren Luckett and Lanny Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Greater Mt. Triumph Church, Atmore Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and her nephews.

Flower bearers were Atmore Garden Club and her former students.

Arrangements were entrusted to Christian Memorial Funeral Home of Atmore.

 

Bobbie Pearson

Mrs. Bobbie Pearson, 80, passed away on Mon., Jan. 22, 2018, in Atmore.

She was native and lifelong resident of Atmore. She was a member of the Poarch Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray Pearson; three sisters, Olen Philyaw, Melbus Roberts and Bonnie Rolin; and three brothers, Arthur Rayborn, Julius Rayborn and Hubert Rayborn.

She is survived by one daughter and son in law, Margie and Ronnie Rolin of Atmore; one brother, Jimmy Rayborn of Thomasville; one brother in law, Doug and Esther Smith of Atmore; one sister in law, Susie and Bobby Ganey of Loxley; two grandsons, Dempsey and Haley Rolin of Atmore and Ronald and Heather Rolin of Atmore; one granddaughter, Heather Rolin of Atmore; four great-grandchildren, Braxton Harrison, Harper Rolin, Bryleigh Rolin and Emersyn Rolin, all of Atmore; and special friend, Lois Schultz of Atmore and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 25, 2018, from at the Poarch Baptist Church with Bro. Bubba Rolin and Bro. Roger Grandstaff officiating.

Burial followed at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation was held Jan. 24, 2018 until service time at the Poarch Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Joe Smith, Michael Ganey, Jr. Ganey, Erby Parker, Don Wayne Rolin and Tyler Reeves.

Honorary pallbearers were Connie Vickery, Lois Schultz, Katie Presley, Margaret Luker, Hazel Steadham, Mary Jane Tullis and Vera Ramer.

Douglas Wayne Barnes

Douglas Wayne Barnes, 47, of Atlanta, Ga., passed away on Jan. 17, 2018 in Denver, Colo.

He was born in Pensacola, Fla. on Sept. 8, 1970 to Wendell and Audrey Miller Barnes. He was a graduate of Escambia County High School, class of 1983 and a graduate of Auburn University. He was employed with Marriott Hotels.

He is preceded in death by his father Wendell Barnes.

He is survived by his mother, Audrey Miller Barnes of Atmore; brother, Jim (Rebecca) Barnes of Mobile; and his Barnes family and many friends.

A memorial service was held Jan. 27, from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Arnold Hendrix officiating.

Family received friends on Jan. 27 at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Ollie Jean Strength

Ollie Jean Strength, 75, of Atmore, passed away on Jan. 24, 2018 in Atmore.

She was born on December 10, 1942 in Escambia County to the late Ollie James and Allie Belle King Strength. She was a graduate of Escambia County High School Class of 1960, attended Massey Draughon Business College and graduated on June 16, 1961. She was a Payroll Clerk for Vanity Fair until it closed in 2001 afterwards she retired.

She is survived by her aunt, Joyce (Russell) Braswell of Atmore; uncle, Shelby King of Flomaton; and her loving her loving family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 27, 2018, from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Robert Heard officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Raymond Kimmons, Allen Sharpless, Aubrey Till, Hugh Long, Jed Dukes and Russell Braswell. Visitation was held Jan. 26, 2018, from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Adam David Gantt

Adam David Gantt went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 12, 2018.

He was born on June 9, 1936 to Cornellia Williams and Kermit Gantt. He graduated Escambia Training School in 1954 and went to Korea, fighting for America during the Korean Conflict.

He married his wife, Miss Mamie Thames in 1958. He was a minister and his occupation was a welder, builder and handy man as well as a part time dentist as the need occasioned and barber to his children.

He is preceded in death by two sons, Steven Lynell Gantt and Adam David Gantt Jr.; and a brother, Willie Charlse Willis.

He is survived by his wife, Mamie Gantt; son, Paul Gantt, son, Thomas Gantt, son, Joseph Derek Gantt, daughter, Valerie Gantt, daughter, Joyce Gantt; grandchild, Paul Gantt Jr. and Parker Daniel Gantt; sisters, Doris Johnson and Dorothy W. Benjamin, Mary L. Green and Jannette and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Jan. 25, 2018, with the Rev. Willie Powell. Interment was held in the V.A. cemetery in Spanish Fort.

Eleanor Annette Jones

Eleanor Annette Jones, 78, of Atmore, passed away on Sun., Jan. 28, 2018, in Atmore.

She worked at the Bingo Palace and Swift Lumber in Bookkeeping, born in Century, Fla. on April 13, 1939 to the late Luke and Bernice Rutherford Emmons.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Merle Forbes.

She is survived by three sons, James (Angie) Jones of Milton, Fla.,

Kenneth (Jenise) Jones of Pensacola, Fla. and David (Felicia) Jones of Arab; one sister, Betty Lou Odom of Atmore; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wed., Jan. 31, 2018, from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Greg Forbes officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service time today, Jan. 31, at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Tommy Ray Taylor

Tommy Ray Taylor, 72, of Atmore, passed away on Sun., Jan. 28, 2018, in Atmore.

He was a truck driver, born in Brewton on April 6, 1945, to the late Lee Olivett and Ida Ora Portwood Taylor.

He is preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.

Survivors are his wife, Beverly “Kathy” Taylor of Atmore; three sons, Kenneth Ray (Mary) Taylor of Springfield, Mo., Chris Conatser of Tennessee and Nate Dennison of Virginia; step-children, Skip (Samantha) Sponeman, Charles (Naomi) Grisham and Kristin Staten; one brother, Lavon (Maggie) Taylor of Collinsville, Ill.; one sister, Elizabeth Beasley of Milton, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Thurs., Feb. 1, 2018, from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Earl Harrison officiating.-

Diane Denise Rabb-Dent of Atmore, leaves to cherish her memories her siblings, Darryl Bang of Hartford, Conn, Sherryl and William America of Atmore, Mamie Dawson of Brocton, Maine, Henry and Lera Rabb of Providence, Ohio, Gregory and Shenita Rabb of Atmore, Tracye and Michael Bell of Bostton, Mass., Barbara Freeman of South Carolina, Jospeh Hicks Jr. of Hartford, Conn. and Shata Pwers of Atmore; her beloved dog, Liz Bit Rabb-Dent; two children (great nieces), TiJayah and Sasha Sumerlin and Enaid Moye; Godchildren, Regina Rabb, Airron Rabb, Henry Rabb Jr., Takila Adger and Scott Rabb Jr. and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Larry Dent; and parents, Henry C. Rabb and Elizabeth L. Wright Rabb-Hicks; and her pops, Joseph Hicks.

She was a beloved co-worker at Walmart in both Atmore and Bay Minette locations, a loved teacher at Lil Angels Development Center and a treasured Usher at Empowerment Tabernacle, Inc.

Funeral arrangements will be held at 1 p.m. this Sat., Feb. 3, 2018, from Empowerment Christian Center. Viewing will be held from noon until the 1 p.m. service time.
