Larry Eugene Fields Sr.

Mr. Larry Eugene Fields Sr., 65, a resident of Stockton, was born on Jan. 22, 1953, to Beatrice Lyons of Stockton. He departed this life on March 6, 2018.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tania Williams, and a son, Larry Eugene Fields Jr.

Mr. Fields was a member of Zion Foundation AME Church of Stockton. He attended Baldwin County High School, where he played running back for the Baldwin County Tigers football team. He worked at International Paper from the age of 18 to 54, where he then retired and continued to enjoy life ever since.

He will be cherished in the hearts of his loving and devoted family. He is survived by a loving and devoted wife, Carolyn W. Fields; two daughters, Stacie (Woodrow) Johnson and Whitley Fields; sons, Nick Fields, Laderrell Fields, Derrick (Laci) Fields; six sisters, Regina Fields, Annette Evans, Gloria Bolar, Marian Smith, Freddie (Robert) Montgomery and Sandra Fairley; two brothers, Plese Evans and Lewis (Monica) Evans; his world revolved around his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and four devoted friends, Melvin Smith, Hartford Edwards, Labarron Smith and Leroy Rodgers.

Pallbearers were Quinton Williams, Lewis Evans, Woodrow Johnson, Plese Evans, Labarron Smith and Terrance Fields.

The flower bearers were nieces and nephews.

Mayberry Funeral Home Atmore Chapel was in charge of arrangements at the sunset service, which was held on March 6, 2018.

Elder Willie Harris Jr., pastor, presided.

Internment was held at Robinson Cemetery in Stockton.

 

Helen Lewis

Ms. Helen Lewis was a sister, aunt and friend who could light up a room with her smile.

Helen enjoyed admiring God’s handiwork through her love for flowers.

She was born in Brewton on April 24, 1932, to Eddie and Dollie Mae Lewis.

On March 4, 2018, she joined her parents, Eddie and Dollie Mae Lewis in heaven.

She leaves to cherish her memories, three sisters, Lula (Frank) Shockley of Vancleave, Miss, Pollie Rosemore of Pensacola, Fla., Dollie Mae Binion (Robert Earl) of Brewton; one brother, Alfred Williams (Norma) of Valdosta, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Mon., March 12, 2018, at Christian Memorial Funeral Home in Brewton with the Rev. Bruce McCreary officiated.

 

Charles Cleveland Abney Sr.

Charles Cleveland Abney Sr. (Pee Wee) was the sixth child born to Fred and Lucille Meeks Abney.

He was born on May 6, 1951, in Atmore.

His father, mother and four siblings preceded him in death.

He was educated in the Escambia County Training School system in Atmore.

Charles joined and attended the Liberty Baptist Church in Atmore. After graduation, he met and married Mary Lois Johnson.

To this union, once child was born, Charles C. Abney Jr.

They migrated to Detroit, Mich., where he became employed with Chrysler Corporation. He retired in 1999.

On Sun., Feb. 18, 2018, at the Ambassadors Nursing and Rehab Center, the Lord called him home.

He leaves to cherish his memories, Mary Abney Salter; son, Charles C. Abney Jr. of Durham, N.C.; two granddaughters, Charlesia Abney of Jacksonville, Fla. and Kadisha Poindexter of Atmore; great-grandchildren, Miracle, Cameson, Ivy’Ahnna and Corderian; one brother, Harry (Barbara) of Detroit; one sister in law, Dorothy Abney of Detroit; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and special friends, Janice, Lynn, Manata and Ed, all of Detroit.

Pallbearers and flower bearers were friends of the family. Internment was held at Stallworth Cemetery in Atmore.

A service was held on March 4 at Hutchinson Funeral Home in Detroit, and on March 9 at Christian Memorial Funeral Home in Atmore.

 

John Mixon

That which was is no longer, what is now may seem a mystery, but what is left are everlasting memories of the beauty and faithfulness of a life, John Mixon, then is now at rest — this is the nature of things.

This is how it has been, how it is and how it will continue to be until the final sentence on the last page of his book of life is written.

One must understand that this work is by the hand of Jesus, a presence whose ways are not as our ways that sees all things not merely as they are, but in the way that he created them to be.

The human mind at times may not comprehend these things, but it is the peace He rings afterward that surpasses all understanding.

Let us not cling to the suffering of life’s circumstances, but to the words that say that, “God is able to do, that which He said He will do.”

Let not the pain be our anthem, but the joy of the Lord be our strength.

Mixon was born to the late, Bill and Velma Mixon. He transitioned from time to eternity on Feb. 26, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Clearance and Ivory Mixon.

Mixon leaves to cherish his loving memories, four children, Johnnie (Saze) Mixon of California, Carlos (Shereka) Baxter of Florida, Patricia (Gandy) Barker of Ohio and Steve (Natasha) Walker of Andalusia; three brothers, Bobby, Willie and Jesse Mixon, all of Mixonville; three sisters, Janice (James) Salter of Evergreen, Elizabeth (Willie) Gandy of Youngstown, Ohio and Edith (Jeffery) Tolbert of Mixonville; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one aunt, Bullue Mitchell of Evergreen; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were nephews and friends, and flower bearers were nieces and friends.

An inhumation service was held at First Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in McKenzie, and care and trust was entrusted to Christian Memorial Funeral Home LLC.

 

Ethel D. Lucas

Ms. Ethel D. Lucas, 98, of Atmore, and a retired school teacher in Escambia County, answered the Master’s Call on Thurs., March 8, 2018, at Atmore Community Hospital.

A native of Camden, Ms. Lucas lived in Atmore most of her life. She’s a graduate of Escambia County Training School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Alabama A&M University (College).

She taught school at Swift, Nokomis, Pleasant Hill and Canoe Schools. She was a member of Greater Mt. Triumph Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, member of the senior choir and missionary society. She enjoyed fishing and traveling.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert McGriff and William Lucas; her parents, Albert and Savannah Jones; two sisters, Lily M. Packer and Corine Hines; and a brother, Willie Cleveland Jones;

Those left to cherish memories of her life are a son, Leo (Catherine) Lucas of Dayton, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held this Sat., March 17, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Greater Mt. Triumph Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Hawthorne, pastor, officiating. Retirement of her remains will be in Stallworth Cemetery. Her body will lie instate at the church one hour prior to funeral service. Public viewing will be this Friday from 2-7 p.m. at the funeral home with Turner Funeral Chapel LLC directing.

 

Arrie Lee Riley

Mr. Arrie Lee “Buddy” Riley, 69, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Atmore, died on March 2, 2018, at Hospice of Dayton.

A native of Atmore, he attended the Escambia County Training School. He had lived in Dayton for many years. He was a bricklayer.

He is survived by two daughters, Naja Lynn Davis and Tennilla Yeldell, both of Dayton; three sons, Arrie Yeldell, Preston Yeldell and Arrie Brannigan all of Dayton; four sisters, Gereana Stargell and Betty Grimes of Dayton, Liza Wilson and Pearlie Hall, both of Atmore; three Ervin Lee Riley of Dayton, Terry Riley and Ray Charles Riley, of Atmore; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held this Sat., March 17, 2018, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Robinsonville with the Rev. Monroe Tucker Jr., pastor, officiating. Inhumation will be in Fairview Cemetery. His body will lie instate at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Public viewing will be held Friday from 2-7 p.m. at the funeral home with Turner Funeral Chapel LLC directing.

 

Cora Matthews

Death is not tragedy for those who have faith, for they are passing from a world filled with struggles and disappointments to one which is finer and better.

Those who sorry for them. Do so needlessly for them it is joy. In a twinkling of an eye, they passed through the veil called death, into a life which is everlasting.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the House of the Lord Forever.”

These were the beliefs that guided the life of Sister Cora Matthews who was born on May 11, 1945, to the late Willie and Georgia Mae Matthews in Wilcox County.

She attended Escambia County Training School, and was employed with Atmore Community Hospital for 42 years.

Sister Cora Matthews was a long time and faithful member of Power Pentecostal Holiness Church, but later joined Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center of Atmore, until her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Georgia Mae Matthews; sister, Leola Matthews Brazzell; brother, Robert Matthews; and nephew, Sonny Matthews.

She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Gary (Brittannia) Matthews of Anniston and Anthony Matthews Sr. of Montgomery; one grandson, Anthony (AJ) Matthews Jr.; a great granddaughter, Kinleigh Latrice Matthews; sisters, Charlotte Matthews of Atmore, Mary (Marcel) Roberson of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and Karen Matthews Orange of Atmore; brothers, Clarence (Lucille) Matthews of Atmore and Cary Matthews of Brewton; one uncle, Daniel (Janice) Dortch of Mobile; a very devoted daughter in law, Torisha Matthews of Atmore; special friends, Annie Bowens, Bessie Mae Johnson and Beatrice Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Robinson-Christian Memorial Funeral Home is directing, with services set for this Sat., March 17, at 11 a.m. at Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center. Bishop Darryl North is officiating.

Viewing will be this Fri., March 16, from 2-6 p.m. at the Christian Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Stallworth Cemetery.

 

Thomas Earl Moore

A funeral service for Mr. Thomas Earl Moore, 41, of Mobile, formerly of Atmore will be announced by Turner Funeral Chapel LLC.

Mr. Moore died as a result of a car accident on Sun., March 4, 2018, in Mobile.

 

Ethel Lucas

A funeral service for Mrs. Ethel Lucas, 98, of Atmore, will be announced by Turner Funeral Chapel LLC.

Mrs. Lucas fell asleep in the Arms of Jesus on Thurs., March 8, 2018, at Atmore Community Hospital.

Bobbie Roche

Bobbie Roche, a resident of Castleberry, passed away on Mon., March 12, 2018, at Evergreen Medical Center.

Ida L. Frye

The funeral service for Ms. Ida L. Frye, 71, of Atmore, will be announced by Turner Funeral Chapel LLC.

Ms. Frye fell asleep in the arms of Jesus on Tues., March 13, 2018, at her residence.

 

Edlyn Gail Webster

Mrs. Edlyn Gail Webster, 75, passed away on Sun., March 11, 2018, in Pensacola, Fla.

She was a native of Rushville, Ind., former resident of New Castle, Ind. and Pensacola (25 years), and has resided in Atmore for the past 17 years. She was a member of OES of New Castle, did volunteer work for various organization and was of the Episcopal Faith.

She was a graduate from Walter P. Chrysler High School in New Castle and attended the Ball State Teacher’s College in Muncie, Ind. and the Patricia Stevens Finishing School in Indianapolis, Ind.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Bob Webster; parents, Robert and Dorothy O’Neal; and one brother, David O’Neal.

She is survived by one son, Jeffrey Webster of Port Charlotte, Fla.; one daughter, Susan (Clay) Helton of Robinsonville; five grandchildren; one aunt, Joyce Hahn of New Castle; one niece, Colleen Hahn of Indianapolis; two brothers in law, David (Bev) Webster of New Castle and Phillip (Tammy) Webster of New Castle; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Thurs., March 15, 2018, from the Barrancas National Cemetery with the Rev. Josh Long officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Wed., March 14, 2018, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Mr. Emuel Gerald Morgan, 71, passed away on Fri., March 9, 2018, in Mobile.

He was a native of Walnut Hill, Fla. and has resided in Perdido for the past 14 years. He was a member of the VFW and employed with Dowdle Gas Co.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Diane Morgan of Perdido; two sons, Daniel Ray (Kim) Morgan of Bay Minette and Kristofor (Leslie Jarman) Laird of Atmore; two daughters, Tonya Lynn Morgan of Sacramento, Calif. and Melisa (J.R.) Godwin of Atmore; two brothers, Billy (Elaine) Morgan of Robinsonville and Ronnie Reggie (Linda Gail) Morgan of McDavid, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Infant Emersyn Kate Rolin was born on Oct. 24, 2017, and passed away on March 8, 2018, in Atmore.

She was a member of the Poarch Creek Indians and attended the Friendly Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandparents, Ray and Bobbie Pearson and Jack and Eunice Rolin; maternal great-grandparents, Howard and Hattie Mae McGhee; aunt, Becky Norman; and special cousin, Ashkia Williams.

Survivors include her parents, Ronald and Heather Rolin of Atmore; one sister, Harper Leigh Rolin of Atmore; maternal grandparents, Joe and Lena White of Atmore; paternal grandparents, Ronnie and Margie Rolin of Atmore; maternal great-grandparents, Butch and Joann White of Tallahassee, Fla.; aunts, Shelly and Romie Chavira of Atmore and Heather Rolin of Atmore; uncles, Dempsey and Haley Rolin of Atmore and James and Hannah White of Atmore; five first cousins, Aron Chavira, Kenslee Chavira, Crimson Chavira, Braxton Harrison and Bryleigh Rolin; numerous great aunts; uncles; other relatives and many friends; and caregivers, Sherry Lambert and Alysha Cunningham.

Joe O’Barr Jr.

Mr. Joe Evans O’Barr, Jr., 64, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at his home in Poarch.

He was a native of Little Rock, Ark., former resident of Mobile and has resided in Poarch for the past 29 years. He was a member of the Poarch Creek Indians; past vestry member of St. Anna’s, was on the PCI Gaming Board and was a member of the St Anna’s Episcopal Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe Sr. and Bessie O’Barr; one brother, Michael Anthony O’Barr; and one sister, Beverly O’Barr.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ellen O’Barr of Poarch; three sons, Charles Anthony (Sylina) O’Barr of Perdido, Jonathan Evans (Stacie) O’Barr of Poarch and Andrew (Elizabeth) Daughtry of Atmore; three daughters, Christy O’Barr (Ronnie) Huskey of Atmore, Shannon (Jason) Griffey of Poarch and Kimberly O’Barr (Nick) Hill of Poarch; two sisters, Brenda (Ricky) Faircloth of Poarch and Teresa “Shada” (Jamie) Thomas of Poarch; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held March 10, 2018, from the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Father Michael Hill officiating.

Burial followed at the Judson Creek Indian Cemetery.

Marvin Larry Free

Mr. Marvin Larry Free, 64, passed away on Sun., March 11, 2018, in Mobile.

He was a native of Greenville and has resided in Davisville, Fla. since 1958. He was the service manager at Hendrix Tractor Co. and was a member of the Pinebarren Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Will and Eunice Free; and wife, Opal Free.

Survivors include his two sons, Gregory Marvin (Aubrey) Free of Buna, Texas and Larry Wayne Free of Bratt, Fla.; two sisters, Glenda M. Nall of Monroeville and Carolyn E. Allen of Mobile; three grandchildren, Leah Nicole Free, Christopher Lee Free and Ryan Adam Free; and one great-grandchild, Grace Lynn Free.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wed., March 14, 2018, from the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Ronald Dove and Bro. Ronald Hall officiating.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. today, Wed., March 14, 2018, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Rosie Abramovich Stewart

Rosie Abramovich Stewart, 101, of Perdido, passed away on Tues., March 6, 2018, in Perdido.

She was born on Oct. 19, 1916, in Des Moines, Iowa, to the late Anton and Mary Gurgurich Abramovich. She attended Splinter Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 73 years, Otis M. Stewart; four sisters; and one brother.

She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn (Franklin) King of Perdido; son, Glenn (Marianne) Stewart of Fairhope; nine grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; family and friends.

Funeral services were held March 9, 2018, from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Michael Hadley and Sister Thursia Long officiating. Burial followed at Bryars-McGill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Garrick Wilder, J.C. Clay, Tony Summersell, Roger King, Korey Biggs and Doyle Elwell. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Klasnich, Jr. and Roy Etheridge.

Visitation was held from March 8, 2018, from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.
