Kevin Garrett is First Baptist Church of Atmore’s new pastor. Garrett’s first Sunday at FBC was on Dec. 2, and he replaces interim pastor Larry Patterson.

Garrett, who served as the guest speaker at the Atmore Rotary Club’s meeting on Dec. 11, comes to Atmore from Gadsden.

He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Jacksonville State University, and holds a master’s degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS).

At present, Garrett is working toward a doctorate of ministry from NOBTS. He formerly served as pastor of Cove Creek Baptist Church in Glencoe.

Garrett said he was 21 years old and worked as a part time music director when he felt called to full time ministry.

Garrett has been married to his wife, Tina, for 30 years, and the couple has two sons, ages 27 and 24, and one daughter in law, age 24.

He said he is seeking God’s will concerning the exact details of how to fulfill what God has called him to do in Atmore.

From his experience and studies regarding people and the church, he believes people need to experience a sense of belonging and purpose. He plans to lead FBC to help people find belonging and purpose in Christ and the church.

“The first thing we must do is ‘shake hands’ with the community and give without expecting a return,” he said. “Then, the handshakes leads to the potential for ‘hugs’ as relationships develop and grow.”

Garrett said he desires for people to experience true community and to join in reaching others.

Garrett said FBC is excited about further extending its hands into the community, learning how needs are being met and where other needs must be addressed.

“God placed me here and I ask him to reveal the mission step by step,” he said.

His wife, Tina, is employed as a special education preschool therapist with the Escambia County school system.
