More than 100 area residents gathered at the Atmore Area YMCA last week for an open house to help garner support for the non-profit organization.

As a part of the Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours, the Y hosted men and women to help give them an idea about what the Y has to offer.

Ross Terry, manager of the Atmore Area YMCA, said the event had a good number of people show up.

“We had a great turnout,” Terry said. “Last time, we held something like this there were just a couple of people that showed up, this time we had several people visit.”

Along with being excited about the number of guests, Terry was also happy about the participation from YMCA board members and staff.

“Our staff and board were really great last week,” Terry said. “I’d like to thank all of them, and I’d also like to thank Sharon Smith for putting everything together for us.”

The event gave those involved with the YMCA an opportunity to show what makes the organization so special.

Terry said he wanted people to see everything that the Y brings to the community.

“This was all about showing people in the community everything that the Y has to offer,” Terry said. “We had a great time doing it, and we hope that they come back to see us and possibly become a member.”

With several people making the trip to visit the Y, there were some who went ahead and joined up.

Terry said that a small number of people became members, and encouraged more to do the same.

“We had four people sign up,” Terry said. “We are happy that they decided to become part of the Y family, and we hope more follow them. For those who might not want to work out, we also have support memberships for $25 a month.”
