Temperatures are getting cooler and the basketballs are being pulled out with the Atmore Area YMCA announcing the dates for its upcoming basketball registration.

The basketball season, which will be held from January to March kicks off with registration running from Dec. 3 until Jan. 12.

The registration fee for Y basketball is $40 for members and $60 for nonmembers. Each additional child for members will be $25.

The age groups for basketball include six to eight year olds, nine to 12 year olds and 13 to 15 year olds.

Ross Terry, manager of the Atmore Area YMCA, said the Y’s basketball program is a great thing for children to have fun with.

“Our basketball program is a really great thing for kids,” Terry said. “They learn the rules of the game. We try to teach them the proper skills and how to play right. It’s also a lot of fun for them, which is the most important thing.”

Once registration is concluded, there will be a skills clinic held at the Y on Jan. 13 and games will begin on Jan. 17.

Terry said there is one need of the league right now.

“We really need volunteer coaches to help us with the league,” he said. “We don’t need any officials because we have some high school officials from the area who help us out.”

Another program coming up after the New Year will be the Y’s $1 joining fee.

This program allows anyone interested in becoming a member of the Y to come in and pay membership dues without a joining fee.

Terry said it will be great for anyone starting their resolutions.

“Everyone who wants to get a good start on their New Year’s resolution should come see us,” he said. “We are pretty much waiving the joining fee to encourage people to join.”
