School is nearing the end of the 2010-11 year and students will soon be back on summer break.

With summer break, children might need a fun place and the Atmore Area YMCA hopes to have the answer for parents who need a place for their children to go.

The Y’s summer day camp will begin on May 31 and run through Aug. 12 with children having the opportunity to take part in activity after activity.

Loretta Berry, childcare director for the Atmore Area YMCA, said the children will get to take part in three field trips.

“We will be going to Little River, to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. and one to the Exploreum in Mobile,” she said.

Each week of the summer day camp will feature a different theme with activities to surround that theme.

Berry said that the children will have fun taking part in each activity for the themed weeks.

“All of our weeks of the camp have a different theme with some themes including ‘On the Ball,’ ‘Surf and Turf,’ ‘Carnival Craze’ and ‘Wet & Wild,’” she said. “Each theme comes with specific activities to interest each child, so that everyone gets to do something fun. With ‘On the Ball’ for example, everything will be geared towards different types of ball games.”

Berry encourages people to sign their children up for the summer day camp because the staff at the Y enjoys the challenge of the children.

“We will have a lot of fun,” she said. “We love the challenge of entertaining the children and we always do a good job, so I want parents to sign them up because we will have a good time.”

The cost of the summer day camp for members is $75 per week for the first child and $45 for each additional child. For nonmembers, the cost is $95 for each child. Additional may costs may arise for the cost of field trips.
