After 16 years on the Escambia County (Ala.) Commission, Weldon Vickrey will not seek re-election this year.
Vickrey, a lifelong resident of Escambia County, said he is proud of his record on the commission and the accomplishments of the commissions on which he has served.
Vickrey said Tuesday one of the greatest joys of the job has been in working with the county employees. He cited the times when work crews were out after hurricanes, moving downed trees and clearing roads.
In a press release this week, Vickrey expressed his appreciation to his family and to his supporters for their encouragement, confidence and faithful support, and to his fellow commissioners for their commitment and dedication.
To the people of Escambia County, Vickrey wrote, "Thank you and my prayers are that each of you will be richly blessed and that you will continue to work toward keeping Escambia County a quality place to live and raise a family."
Someone said to Vickrey the other day, "I guess you're scared you'd lose if you ran again."
Vickrey's last meeting will be the last meeting in October.
