To the editor:
I voted early Tuesday, Nov. 7, at precinct 11 in the Walnut Hill community. I was anxious to vote because I wanted to see a good and decent man occupy the White House for a change. I was anxious to vote because I wanted to see changes made in the county government, especially in district 5.
There were some politicians who awoke Wednesday morning following the Tuesday election with some terrible headaches, wondering what happened. People were tired of business as usual. They were tired of seeing the same few people, whose only interests are their own selfish interests, calling the shots.
Tuesday, Nov. 7, was a special day for me because the person who voted ahead of me was Mr. Joe Robbins, who is the Walnut Hill community's oldest citizen. I have known Mr. Joe Robbins a lifetime and I know him to be a good man. God has certainly blessed Mr. Joe Robbins and has allowed him to live a long productive life. Mr. Robbins is 102 years old.
When I was a teenager, Mr. Robbins organized the Walnut Hill community baseball team. Back then you could buy a Coke for a nickel. The only problem was most of us didn't have the nickel. The equipment we had was paid for out of the pocket of Mr. Robbins. I can recall six or seven of us piling into Mr. Robbins' car, going to the games. I cannot recall anyone ever paying him one red cent.
I have not ever known of Mr. Robbins to seek any recognition for any accomplishments. I have never known of him to boast about anything he had done. Mr. Robbins is a humble man and, in my view, that says a lot about the kind of person he is.
I pray that God will continue to bless Mr. Joe Robbins. And I look forward to seeing him at precinct 11 on the next election day.
