The Escambia County High School Blue Devils got their basketball season off to a fast start Thursday as they whipped an under-manned Frisco City team, 78-20.
Frisco City, which completed its football season last week in the first round of the state playoffs, had several injured players which plagued the basketball team in the opener.
Coach Bob Zarahn said it was hard to say how much the injuries hurt Frisco City, but said his team did a good job in securing the victory.
Of the 12 players on the team, 11 got quality playing time.
Leading scorers in the game were Barrett Finney who scored 15 points while Sharell Johnson and Steven Moore earned 12 points each. Finney also was the team's leading rebounder in a game where the Devils out-rebounded their opponents 53 to 20.
Zarahn said that Anthony McCants and Terrance Hazley played very strong defensively.
The next contest is certain to be more competitive as Blount comes to Atmore Tuesday. Blount is expected to have a good team and is a favorite to win the area. Zarahn said coming off of a lop-sided win will not affect the team's performance against Blount.
Getting a victory to begin the season was an important step for the Devils.
The Devils will play Blount at home on Tuesday with the game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
