It took extra innings, but the Escambia County Lady Blue Devils got the job done in the bottom of the ninth inning as they scored the only run of the game to defeat Daphne 1-0.
Melissa Jones, who has been dominate during her appearances on the mound for the Lady Blue Devils, did well once again as she held Daphne scoreless and only surrendered two hits through nine innings on her way to earning the victory.
In high school softball, when the score remains tied after seven innings, they go to the International tie breaker rules. Beginning in the eighth, the person to bat last in the previous inning is put on second base to begin the inning.
In the ninth inning, Rachel Garrett was put on second base. She advanced to third on a passed ball. The first batter of the inning was Hope Riley who laid down a bunt. As the throw went toward first base for the first out of the inning, Garrett headed for home plate. She slid in safely just under the glove of the Daphne catcher who had received the ball from the first baseman.
Leading hitters for Escambia County were Riley who went one for three with an RBI, Garrett, who went one for three with a run and Hannah Rigsby who went one for four.
