Johnson wins H.C. Williams tourney

A new champion was crowned for the H.C. Williams Memorial Golf Tournament this week at the Atmore Country Club.
Paul Johnson, a native of Atmore, edged Charlie Paulk of Lake Wells, Fla. by one stroke to earn the victory. Johnson scored a 38, 31 and 39 to finish at 108, or three over, for the tournament.
Johnson said he played pretty well over the first 18 holes. But, also said he fell a little on the final nine.
Golfers from Alabama and Florida emerged at the Country Club to take part in the event which first began in 1989.
Tournament chairman Ronnie Brown said the event was a huge success.
With no rain in sight, the golfers enjoyed the spring-like weather during the tournament and out-of-towners enjoyed the trip into Atmore.
In the championship flight, B division, Chris Brannon finished in first place with a score of 113. Winners of other flights included: first flight – Scott Cunningham of Milton, Fla.; second flight – Lynn Blackmon of Fairhope; third flight – Frank Dittrick of Milton; fourth flight – Joe Fuller of Bay Minette; fifth flight – Bill Hendrix of Atmore and the sixth flight went to Jim Phillips of Eastern Shore, Ala.
The Ladies of the Atmore Country Club, headed by Sharon Brown, sponsored a lunch for the field of golfers.
