Building on 26 years of tradition, the city of Atmore will once again celebrate its annual Mayfest this weekend.
At 9:15 Saturday morning, the event will begin and the fun won't stop until late in the afternoon. Artists and craftsmen will be on hand throughout the day selling their wares, while the sounds of local and regional entertainers and the works of area artists fill the senses.
And if that's not enough, don't forget about the food. Numerous non-profit groups will be cooking a variety of treats to help raise money for their programs and professional food vendors will also be on hand serving the treats they have become famous for cooking over the years.
Besides the fun and the food, though, Mayfest will offer residents something unique that many of us seem to forget about in this day of fast-paced life. It offers a snapshot of our community as it is briefly suspended in time. It's a homecoming. It's a time for people to come together and take pride in the city and to invest in its future. It's about family, church, community and wholesome fun.
Many of us take events like this for granted, but as time goes on, it will be up to our children to sustain these strong traditions that bind people to their community. And our children can't do it if we don't teach them how.
Gather up your lawn chairs, load the blankets into your automobiles and take your families to what promises to be a spectacular event that only comes along once a year. Teach your children the importance of participating in civic activities. Spend a few dollars at a booth run by one of your favorite local organizations. Invest your time and your dollars in the community and in its future by involving your family.
It's inexpensive; it's wholesome; and it's something that the entire family can do together. Don't miss out on the opportunity to instill a sense of pride, joy and responsibility toward the community in your children. Come to Mayfest. It's something you don't want to miss.
