Renovations totalling more than a half million dollars are under way at Atmore Community Hospital.
One of the most visible changes is the nurses' station on the second floor. It's the first thing visitors see when the elevator doors open. The glass has been removed and two small adjacent rooms have been taken in, creating a large open area with built-in work spaces. A small office across the hall has been enlarged for doctors' use.
Behind the hospital, the foundation has been laid for a 6,000 square foot building the purchasing department, housekeeping and maintenance.
Plans are also in the works to move the pharmacy from the ground floor to the second floor where it will be contiguous to the intensive care unit and the medical-surgical nurses station.
Future plans include renovating the obstectrics department.
Work on the infrastructure is being done along with the renovations. Since the hospital was built in 1966, more than 30 years ago, several areas need to be upgraded including electrical, plumbing, and heating, venting and air conditioning.
The hospital operates under three-, five- and 10-year facility and campus plan.
