The Poarch Creek Indians are hosting a community Fourth of July celebration next week.
Brothers David Gehman and Jerry Gehman are organizing the event which will include entertainment, a salute to veterans and a fireworks show.
Gehman said they have been overwhelmed by the collective support they have received since they decided to head this up just a few weeks ago.
Activities will be held off Calvin McGhee Drive, behind the Pow Wow grounds. The Poarch Police Department will handle traffic control to ensure that everyone gets in and out quickly.
The public will be in a wide, grassy open area. Everyone is invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Some bleacher seating will be available. Gehman said picnicking and tailgating are encouraged. Concessions will be available with proceeds from the sale of drinks going toward the cost of the fireworks. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
After the entertainment and veterans' recognition, the evening will end with a fireworks display. Poarch Fire Chief Ronnie Jackson, trained pyrotechnician, will head up the fireworks operations, with assistance from former Atmore Fire Chief Charlie Rutherford and possibly from former Assistant Chief Glenn Faircloth.
Volunteers are needed in several areas. Anyone who would like to volunteer may call David Gehman at 368-3353 or 368-3657.
Anyone who has program ideas or recommendations that are patriotric in nature may call David at the above numbers or Jerry Gehman at 368-8438 or 446-3707.
A schedule will be published in the Sunday edition of The Advance.
