A resurfacing project by the state that includes Atmore's Main Street is near completion despite recent rains slowing the construction.
Contractors working on the resurfacing project through downtown and a widening project from East Pine Street to the Florida state line were off last week due to the Independence Day holiday.
Alabama Department of Transportation Division Engineer Ronnie Poiroux said the final striping of the resurfaced portion of Main Street could be completed this week, but added that recent rains has slowed down the widening project.
The resurfacing project begins at Escambia County Road 12 and ends at the intersection of Pine Street.
Poiroux said the preliminary work that comes with the widening project can be a slow process.
He does not expect drivers to be overly inconvenienced by the work.
The same contractors are working on both projects.
The resurfacing project has been contracted for $650,000 while the widening project is costing the state $800,000.
