The Escambia County Commission approved to enter into a contract that will allow for the Escambia County Transit Authority to work in partnership with Jefferson Davis Community College in the busing of students.
The agreement allows for ECATS to provide transportation services to the college in exchange for payment per mile. The agreement will provide transportation for students to the campus as well as transportation to various events.
In addition to the approving the agreement, Commissioner David Stokes use the opportunity to commend Faye Jernigan, ECATS director, for her work with the program.
ECATS is federally funded and is available to all county residents.
The commission also discussed the following items during the meeting.
Approved to allow the Escambia County Advisory Board to review applications of candidates to fill the RSVP director job vacancy.
The advisory board will review the applications and present its recommendation to the commission for its final approval. The commission can approve or accept the candidate. If the candidate is not approved, the advisory board will make another recommendation.
Commission Chairman Larry White, who is a member of the advisory board, will not participate in the application review process, but will vote with the commission to accept or reject the candidate.
Four commissioners voted in favor of the measure while Commissioner Wiley Tait abstained.
The commission voted unanimously to place a speed marker on Whispering Pine Road.
The road is located in the central portion of the county near the Foshee Community, northwest of McCall.
White said residents of the road asked for the placement of the signs.
The speed limit on the road will be marked at 25 miles per hour.
The commission rescinded its previous approval for appointments to the Solid Waste Board. The members believed to be up for re-appointment actually still had one more year on their term.
The appointments to the Solid Waste Board are not due until Nov. 2002. All of those seats are held by commissioners and they had been re-appointed to those seats.
The commission approved the minutes of its Oct. 2 meeting and and approved accounts payable.
The next county commission meeting is scheduled for Nov. 26, at 9 p.m. at the Escambia County courthouse.
