Dr. James Lewis Merriwether, Sr., 87, of Birmingham formally of Atmore, died Monday, November 12, 2001, in Birmingham.
He was retired from First Baptist Church of Atmore and had been a pastor of Poarch Mission, McCullough First Baptist Church, Judson Baptist Church, Pleasant View Baptist Church, and an associate pastor of Manor Baptist Church of Mobile. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Verell Merriwether and his parents, Jacob and Claudia Viola Robinson Merriwether.
Dr. Merriwether is survived by four sons, James Lewis Merriwether Jr. of Birmingham, Carles Merriwether Destin, Fla., Tom Merriwether of Atlanta, Ga. and David Merriwether of Newnan, Ga.; one daughter, Leola M. Carver of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil; three sisters, Cynthia M. Butler of Atmore, Ruth Conner of Tampa, Fla., and Bessie Malone of Augusta, Ga.; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, November 15 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Brother Kelly Brown officiating.
Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home, INC. was in charge of the arrangements.
