Holiday shoppers may get a little something extra in Atmore this December.
The Atmore City Council is poised to waive city sales taxes for the entire month, giving shoppers a 3 percent break on retail purchases.
The Council will consider the sales tax waiver in a special called meeting at 9 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Atmore City Hall.
Merchants would, however, still be obligated to collect state and county taxes. They will also be required to file a city zero tax return.
The initiative comes as a result of layoffs at key area industries that will cause the elimination of more than 500 jobs.
The decision won't be without its downside. The city will waive tax dollars destined for city coffers in the process. Further details will be released later, Shell said, but early projections are that the cost will be substantial.
City officials will provide information to local retailers tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 29, in meetings scheduled at 7 a.m. and at 2 p.m. in the Atmore Lions Community Center.
