Two armed robbers wearing "Scream" masks targeted an Atmore convenience store Thursday evening.
At 7:30 p.m., Thursday, two employees of a Quick Stop on North Main Street, just outside the Atmore city limits, were allegedly threatened by gunpoint and forced to give up money that was in the store's register to masked robbers.
According to Escambia County Sheriff Tim Hawsey, two males wearing Halloween masks, like the one made famous by the movie "Scream," entered the store and pulled weapons on the two employees working there.
The robbers allegedly forced a male employee to the back of the store and made a female clerk open the cash register.
The employee told deputies that the men took the money from the register, ripped the phone from the wall and told her not to move. The robbers then left the store and ran away on foot.
The male employee told officials that the robbers took his wallet.
After waiting, the employees went to a nearby phone and called the Atmore Police Department. Both APD officers and deputies responded to the scene.
Hawsey said tracking dogs from Fountain Prison were brought in an attempt to track down the robbers. He said the dogs tracked the robbers to a nearby trailer park before they lost the scent.
Hawsey said the men robbed the store of "several hundred" dollars.
Hawsey said the case remains under investigation.
