The Escambia Academy Cougars boys varsity basketball team also began their week by playing against Jay High School.
The Cougars wanted wanted to avenge an earlier season loss to to Jay in Jay, 82-47.The Cougars loss against Jay was their worst loss of the year. The loss was also the worst of Coach Chad Prewitt coaching career.
The Cougars would like nothing more than to stomp Jay in front of their own home crowd,
The Cougars are coming off of a very impressive win against Crenshaw Academy, 48-44. The win against Crenshaw improved the Cougars to 9-7 and a win against Jay would put them three games over .500 for the first time this season.
Jay put away any doubts as to who would win this game in the fourth quarter. They outscored the Cougars 18-10 for the quarter, and totally demoralized anything the Cougars did on defense to stop the onslaught of points on offense, on their way to the 70-51 victory.
The Cougars out shot Jay from the free-throw line, but it was not enough for the win. The Cougars shot 57% from the line in the loss on 16/28 shooting. Jay shot a miserable 44% from the line in the win on 11/25 shooting.
This was the second game the Cougars have played without leading scorer Justin Shirley. Without Shirley, the Cougars have no established scorer and have to rely on other players to step up and take on the scoring load.
Cody White was the only Cougars in double figures on the night with 15 points. Bradford Price and David Daniel followed in points on the night for the Cougars with eight points apiece. Robert Hardy also had seven points in the loss for the Cougars.
While the Cougars only had one player score in double figures, Jay had three players score in double figures.
Travis Smith lead Jay in points with 14 points on the night. Brandon Morris followed with 12 points. Kevin Smith also had 11 points in the win for Jay.
The Cougars next game will be against the South Montgomery Red Raiders in South Montgomery. The games will start at 4:00.
