The Escambia County High School Blue Devils baseball team played their second game of this young season last Saturday against the Gulf Shores Dolphins
The Devils came into the game with high expectations because they won the first game of their double header against the Dolphins, and the Devils had good reason to believe that they would win the second game also.
They were wrong however, as Gulf Sbores came out and put down any thoughts of an easy victory as they blasted starter Bobo Patrick for runs in the game's first four innings to make the score 8-2 before the Devils knew what hit them.
The Blue Devils struck first blood however, as Derrick Martin scored on a fielders choice by Mark Rodgers to put the Devils up 1-0.
The Dolphins erased the Devils lead in the bottom of the first however, as they scored one run of their own to make the score even at 1-1 to begin the second inning.
The Dolphins scored two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up on the Devils by two, 3-1, heading into the third inning.
The Devils managed to score again in the third inning, as Ryan Daniels ripped a single to score Mark Rodgers from second base, to make the score 3-2 going into the bottom of the third inning.
The Dolphins took the lead again however, as they scored two runs to go ahead for good on a mixture of hits and errors to take a 5-2 lead into the fourth inning.
The Dolphins scored their last three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 8-2 and make the Devils chances of a comeback slim to none.
Adam Young relieved starter Bobo Patrick in the bottom of the sixth inning and breathed life into a dead Devil team with a dominating performance on the mound, as he struck out the side with a dazzling array of fastballs and curveballs.
The Devils came back in the top of the sixth inning with a new attitude, and got a rally going as Derrick Martin scored his second run of the game on a Rodgers single to make the score 8-3.
Things really started to get interesting, when Rodgers scored on a Ronnie Pettway blooper to make the score 8-4 with only one out. But a win was not in the cards for the Devils however as they used up their last two outs and lost the game to the Dolphins 8-4.
Derrick Martin and Ryan Daniels lead the team in hitting, as they both went 2/3 from the plate. Daniels also had a team leading two RBI's in the loss.
Mark Rodgers also went 2/4 with one RBI for the Devils at the plate.
Bobo Patrick got the loss on the mound for the Devils as he pitched four innings, allowed 10 hits, eight runs (six earned), struck out one, and walked none.
Adam Young pitched a totally dominating two innings for the Devils, as he stuck out five of the six batters he faced, and allowed no runs and no hits.
The Devils next game will be against the Flomaton Hurricanes on Tuesday night at 3:30. Admission will be $ 3.00.
