An Atmore woman died at the scene after her van crashed into a tree near Jay Monday afternoon.
Vicky M. Garrett, 39, of Jones Road in Atmore, died after her 1992 Chevrolet van hit a tree on State Road 4, 2/10ths of a mile west of Shell Road. Also in the vehicle was 5-year-old Jamie R. Garrett, who was uninjured in the accident, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
In a report filed by investigating trooper C.S. Chambless, the van was trveling east on State Road 4 when it drifted onto the south shoulder of the roadway. That's when, Chambless reports, the driver apparently steered right and overcorrected the vehicle, causing it to cross the westbound lane of State Road 4 and drive onto the north shoulder of the roadway before striking the tree.
Garrett died on the scene, according to the report.
Both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts and child restraints at the time of the accident, according to the report. The accident happened at 2:40 p.m. Monday.
