Cougars, Lady Cougars take wins, climb in rankings

The Escambia Academy Cougars and Lady Cougars played at Pike Academy on Dec. 5 and faced the Wilcox Academy Wildcats at Wilcox on Dec. 10.
In the Lady Cougars' victory over Pike Academy, Meagan Jackson led the team with 18 points. She also had four rebounds. Lori Bonds followed with 11 points and four rebounds. Senior Jessica Gibbs had five points and 10 rebounds, and Mandi Norton had two points and seven rebounds. Kaylie Castleberry had four rebounds and Anna Parish and Rayleen Miller each had one rebound.
The Cougar varsity boys also defeated Pike Academy. The team was led by Bradford Price with 14 points and two rebounds. Cole Norton followed with 11 points and six rebounds, Chris Moore had nine points and four rebounds, Stephen Shirley had nine points and three rebounds, Robert Hardy had eight points and 11 rebounds, David Daniel had four points and one rebound, Zach Smith had four points, Zach Thomas had three points, and Cody White had two points and three rebounds.
The Cougars defeated the Wildcats 53-41 on Dec. 10. Price led the scoring in that game with 12 points and three rebounds. Jace Beasley followed with 10 points and three rebounds. Hardy also scored 10 points and led the team in rebounds with six. Norton had eight points and one rebound, Daniel had five points and five rebounds, Moore had three points and one rebound, Smith had three points, and Billy McCann had two points and two rebounds.
The Lady Cougars also posted a win against the Wilcox as they defeated the Wildcats 41-30. Jackson led the team with 14 points and two rebounds. Bonds had eight points and four rebounds, Gibbs had seven points and 14 rebounds, Castleberry scored six points and had seven rebounds, Parish had four points and one rebound, and Jamie Drew scored two points and had two rebounds.
On Dec. 12, the Alabama Sports Writers Association released the current rankings for state high school basketball. The Escambia Academy varsity boys basketball team is currently ranked No. 7 in the AISA. Their record stands at 5-2. The Escambia Academy Lady Cougars are ranked No. 3 in the AISA. Currently, they have a 6-1 record.
