EA JV State champs again

The Escambia Academy Lady Cougars won all three games in the Junior Varsity State Tournament held Saturday at Wilcox Academy to become the JV state champions for the second year in a row.
The team, coached by Kevin Steedley and seeded at number four entering the tournament, began the day by defeating Pickens Academy 34-10. Alison Thomas led the scoring in the game with 12 points. She was followed by Lori Bonds with ten points, Jaime Drew with six points, Claire Jones with three points, Courtney Smith with two points, and Ellen Corman with one points.
Later in the afternoon the Cougars took their second victory of the day by defeating the number one seeded team in the tournament, Autauga Academy 37-20. Bonds led the scoring in that game with 14 points. Drew scored 11 points, Thomas scored six points, C. Smith scored five points, and Katie Smith scored one point. Bonds also had 11 rebounds.
In the championship game played Saturday night, Escambia defeated Patrician Academy, the number two team, 40-35, in the Lady Cougars' highest scoring game of the year. The team also had their highest shooting percentage of the year for the game, making 47 percent of their shots. Bonds and C. Smith led the team with 11 points each. Thomas followed with eight points, Drew scored five points, Morgan Dorriety scored three points, and Corman scored two points. Drew also had five steals and four assists in the game.
The JV Lady Cougars finished the weekend with a 14-3 record. They will play again Thursday at home against Jackson beginning at 4 p.m.
