On March 4 the Escambia Academy Cougar track team began its season at Jay High School in Jay, FL. Competing in the event were Escambia Academy, Pensacola Christian, Jay High School, and Central High School.
Escambia Academy saw several good performances by Cougar athletes. Shelby Hester came in second place in the discus event and Jessica Nesmith took third place in shot put. The boys relay team, composed of Chivas Thompson, Dalton Murphy, Matthew Rice, and Dustin Roberts took second in the four by 100 relay event while equaling last season's best time. Murphy also competed in the 100 meter race, coming in fourth. Alan Ash placed fourth in the two mile run and Matthew Rice came in fifth in the long jump competition.
Coach Burt Rice said he was encouraged by his team's season debut. "We're a very young team, but I'm very pleased with our performance."
The Cougars faced Jay on Tuesday and will travel to Tuscaloosa on Friday to compete.
