Big changes and a lot more racing are in store for the fans and drivers at Flomaton Speedway this season. Opening day will be March 23 at 1:30pm.
The track has added two new divisions for 2003, the Bombers and the Late Models will run every week along with the Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks. The Bombers will be an "enduro/factory stock" type class that will allow people to get into racing with minimal cost and experience. The speedway also has 12-15 Late Models committed to race every week. Flomaton will be the only area dirt track to run a weekly late model show. Also on the schedule this season is the O'Reilly Auto Parts S.U.P.R Sprint Car Series. This series based out of Louisiana also races in Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas but will be making its only appearance in Alabama or Florida this year when it visits the speedway on September 13th.
"We have increased the seating capacity to 1200, and will add several hundred more by the Annual 4th of July Shootout," said track owner Jimmy Goodwin. New sidewalks and a new tower are also in the works, and should be in place shortly. Several staff changes have also been made to allow the track to run more efficiently.
Last Years Gulf Coast Dirt Track Championships in November were a big success drawing over 95 drivers from four gulf coast states, and earning the track some regional attention. Many of the championship drivers are planning to return during the season to attempt to earn a starting provisional for this year's race scheduled for October 25-26. "We brought several cars over with us last year and that is all we have talked about during the off-season – getting back to Flomaton!" said Sandra Cantrell of LaPlace, La. The Fourth Annual 4th of July Shootout and Fireworks Show will be the first chance to win a provisional starting spot. The second will be the Third Annual Labor Day Shootout on September 1.
Several kids events are also planned this season, starting with the Easter Egg Hunt on April 19 and the first of two kids Bike races on May 31. The speedway will also have a Ladies Powder Puff Race on April 6. All interested female drivers should call the track at 251-296-DIRT or Kieth Foss 850-982-4807.
Admission prices for the grandstands are $10 adults, kids 6-12 $3, kids under 6 are free. Pit passes are $20. Children are allowed in the pits with a pit pass and signed release. There are no entry fees for regular races, and no membership fees. All race purses are guaranteed.
