Do you often find yourself battling decisions. What if I do this?
What if I do that? What will happen? At least you are stopping to think!
Have you seen the WWJD signs? If so, you know they represent "What would Jesus Do?" Doing the right thing is not always easy. Sometimes we depend on guidance from others. Educators are constantly reminding students to think before they act, to respect others, to demonstrate pride, courtesy, and acts of honesty. These are just a few of the character education traits which students are expected to follow.
Many great leaders have set remarkable examples for us all to follow. One particular hero that comes to mind is Abraham. He was considered the father of the Hebrews. The nation of Israel and the fulfillment of God's plan began with Abraham and his family. This hero was very trusting in God and must have believed that God always does the right thing'. For most of us, when we have a need in our lives or maybe even a simple dream, we find it difficult to wait. We typically behave as little children, but Abraham waited more than ten years to see his dreams come true.
Teachers are so good at reminding students to be patient. They teach them not only core subjects, but character and life skills as well. What happens once we graduate from high school? Once we leave home and a school setting, who teaches us then?
For Abraham, God was not only his teacher, but his best friend, his strength. His patience was truly tested. When he was sent out of the land of Ur, he felt like God had promised him that he would possess the land of Canaan, he would have many descendants, and his offspring would become a great nation. Obviously, the fulfillment of that desired promise would bring him great joy! After ten years of waiting, God still had not come through for Abraham. At this time, he had left his family and country, lived through a famine, and still had no son. Then, he received a vision from God. He soon realized that God's ways and His sense of time is not always in agreement with ours. After fully gaining Abraham's trust, God fulfilled His promise.
As parents, do you feel your child trusts you to always make the right decisions for his/her life? Do you attempt to do the right thing when faced with controversy? Do you question your own abilities at times and not know where to turn for guidance? Your children do not expect you to be perfect, but they do trust your guidance and concern for their well-being and support. In a rapidly changing world, it is critical that adults look beyond adversity or feelings of insecurity. As parents and/or leaders, adults need to search for their greater purpose in life.
