The Board of Directors of First National Bank has formally announced the appointment of Shepherd R. Marsh as president of the bank.
A native of Macon, Ga., Marsh began his banking career with C&S National Bank some 33 years ago.
"A lot has changed about banking in that time," Marsh said Friday. "But the one thing that hasn't changed is that it is still about people."
Marsh is a graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.
Marsh served as executive vice president and director of First National Bank of Barnsville, Ga., before joining First National of Atmore.
He also served as president of the Barnsville Chamber of Commerce, president of the Barnsville Rotary Club, chairman of the board of commissioners of the Barnsville Housing Authority, vice chairman of the Monroe Academy in Forsyth, Ga., and various leadership positions in the First United Methodist Church of Barnsville.
"One reason we came here was we were impressed with how great the people here are," he said.
Marsh's wife, Jan, is an ASID certified interior designer and operates her own firm, j. marsh designs. The couple has a daughter, a photography major at the Art Institute of Atlanta, and a son who is a freshman at the University of Mississippi.
Marsh assumed his duties as president Nov. 1. The family will relocate in January.
Tim Currie, chairman of the board of directors of the bank, said, "The First National Bank is fortunate to have a seasoned banking professional such as Shep join its team."
Marsh succeeded Ollie Strawbridge, who retired Oct. 31 as president and CEO. Strawbridge joined First National in 1958, was elected to the board of directors in 1977, and named president and CEO of the bank in 1986.
First National Bank and the community salute Strawbridge for his many years of service to the bank and to Atmore. He and his wife, Rachel, will enjoy an active retirement with their children, Anna Lisa and Jason Daniel, Laurie Strawbridge, David Strawbridge and granddaughter Ansley Daniel.
