Wednesday morning, at approximately 7:38 a.m., a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe was involved in a rollover accident as it headed south on North Main Street. Police report the driver as Carol Wiggins Nelson of School Street in Atmore.
According to witness statements, the vehicle was traveling south on North Main Street between Avenue A and Liberty Street. It seems as though there was a limb or some type of obstruction hanging from a tree into the roadway. The vehicle swerved to avoid the limb or obstruction and over-compensated causing the vehicle to cross the northbound lane and lose control.
The vehicle overturned, ejecting the driver. The driver and the three passengers where all transported by the Atmore Ambulance service to the Atmore Community Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident.
Cecil Corey, a witness at the accident, said, "She (Nelson) had just left Escambia County Middle School and was heading toward downtown. I was driving behind her and noticed that around the Gordon building she began to swerve. The vehicle then rocked on two wheels and flipped. It rolled once in the highway and then flipped again landing off the highway onto the east side of the road."
Investigations into the accident were ongoing as of press time.
