Obituaries for May 16, 2004 edition of the Atmore Advance
Mary Evelyn Smith Biggs
Mrs. Mary Evelyn Smith Biggs, 96, of Lottie died Friday, May 14, 2004 at her residence.
She was born in Perdido on January 18, 1908 to the late William Thomas "Doc" and Clara Evelyn Levins Smith.
She was a retired school teacher. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Biggs; oldest son, John Leon Biggs; one brother, Thomas Franklin Smith; two sisters, Clara Ann Smith and Vivian Smith Little.
She is survived by three sons, Charles William Biggs of Warrington, Benny Dale Biggs of Lottie and Henry Derwood Biggs of Stapleton; one daughter, Evelyn Ann Biggs Williams of Brewton; two sisters, Willie Mae Smith Snyder of Saraland and Edna Smith Chambless of Bay Minette; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be Sunday, May 16, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Lottie United Methodist Church with Dr. Will Baker officiating.
Interment will follow in Lottie United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Biggs will lie in state at the Church one hour prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to the Lottie Methodist Church Cemetery Fund of Lottie or United Methodist Children's Home.

James Allen Burklund
Mr. James Allen Burklund, 40, of Atmore died on Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his residence.
Mr. Burklund was a shop foreman in the tire industry. His parents were Carl and Donna Burklund. Mr. Burklund was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Burklund.
He is survived by his father, Carl Burklund of Davisville; one sister, Leisa Boyette of Atmore; one niece; one nephew; other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. from Atmore Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Enfinger officiating.
Burial will follow at the Pine Barron Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 until 6 p.m. on Sunday at Atmore Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
Atmore Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
Emily Vernel "Mellie" Dorriety
Mrs. Emily Vernel "Mellie" Dorriety, 94, of Atmore died Tuesday, May 11, 2004 in Pensacola.
She was born in Escambia County, Ala. on July 4, 1909 to the late William Henry and Willie Anna Ashcraft Dorriety. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Services were Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 2 p.m. from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Billy Lucas officiating.
Interment followed in Huxford Baptist Cemetery.

Williard "Poodlum" Johnson
Mr. Willard "Poodlum" Johnson Jr., 72, of Atmore died Sunday, May 9, 2004 in Atmore.
He was born on February 2, 1932 in Escambia County to Willard and Viana Whidbee Johnson Sr. He was a retired supervisor with Vanity Fair Mills.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma B. Johnson of Atmore; his mother, Viana Whidbee Johnson; three sons, Dr. Paul E. and Ginger Johnson of Bainbridge, Ga., Michael W. and Brenda McGhee Johnson of Douglasville, Ga., and Gary W. and Linda Johnson of Bainbridge, Ga; three brothers, Amos Johnson of Demopolis, Bobby Johnson of Mobile, and Billy Johnson of Decatur; four sisters, Doris Steadham of Foley, Louise Donald of Atmore, Joyce Thomson of Washington Crossing, and Laura Napps of Florance; six grandchildren, Matt Johnson, Adam Johnson, C.J. White, Olivia Johnson, Ashley Johnson, and Felecia Johnson.
Services will be Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Brooks Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Grindle and Rev. Don Davis officiating.
Interment will follow in Serenity Gardens.
Active pallbearers are, Matt Johnson, Adam Johnson, C.J. White, Cecil Coleman, Hubert Brown, Pete Helton, Earl Bryant, and Aubrey "Tobe" Sellers. Honorary pallbearers are: Claude Bouler, Brooks Memorial Pete Helton Sunday School Class, and Deacons of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations maybe made to the American Cancer Society, Suite 101, 900 Western American Circle Mobile, Ala. 36609.
