Sixth-grader Tyler Chandler became the winner of this year's Escambia Academy Geographic Bee on Jan. 6 qualifying him for the state level competition and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship, said Patty Castleberry, sponsor for this event.
The top two students in each grade level were awarded with a $5 gift certificate to Community Cup and Chandler was awarded a medal in addition to his qualification for state-level competition.
Chandler placed ahead of contestants in seventh and eighth grades.
The National Geographic society sponsors the Geographic Bee, a contest where students answer oral questions on geography, history and culture to win the school-level first round, said
The winner of that round must then fill out a written test. The top 100 scorers on the test from each state will go on to the state level competition.
These winners will receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Geographic Bee where they will compete for the $25,000 scholarship and a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society.
Alex Trebek, the host of Jeopardy, will moderate the national event.
