Tammy Graham of the Atmore YMCA warns that people are calling pretending to be YMCA employees.
"Someone is calling our members and telling them they have won a new car," said Graham. "We are not giving away any new cars."
Graham became aware of the scam after receiving two phone calls from members asking if the YMCA was really giving away cars as part of a membership drive.
"The people who have called me say the person on the other end of the line has not asked for any personal information such as credit card numbers, account numbers or social security numbers," Graham said.
"There's no telling how many people have been called or what they have been asked," Graham added. "When I came in to work one morning there was a man in the parking lot asking if he could pick up his new car – I thought he was joking," she said.
Timing also gives this possible scam some validity.
"The worst thing about this is that we just finished a membership drive and we don't want people to think this is part of it," Graham said.
The YMCA also has personal information on file and no information should be given out over the phone.
