A 55-year-old Atmore man died Saturday when the vehicle he was driving left the roadway striking a culvert and landing in a ditch according to Atmore Police Department.
Officers with the Atmore Police Department responded to the one vehicle accident on Martin Luther King Avenue at approximately 7:55 p.m. Saturday night.
The occupant, Floyd English was driving a 1997 Jeep Cherokee. According to witness statements it appeared that English swerved in the roadway where he then lost control of his vehicle and entered a ditch that was 15 feet deep. The vehicle struck a culvert and came to rest on a gas line.
The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to Atmore Community Hospital by Atmore Ambulance Service where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators with Atmore Police Department are waiting on the release of the autopsy results to determine if alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this accident.
English was a graduate of Escambia County Training School, Faulkner College, and Jefferson Davis and was currently enrolled in University of South Alabama. English also served in the United States Army. He was working in construction as a masonry.
His funeral will be held in Atmore Saturday, March 11.
