Darrell Stephens graduated from Escambia County High School in May and he now gets to do something he said he has desired to do for a long time.
He signed a football scholarship with Waldorf College July 28 as his father, Darrell Stephens Sr. and ECHS athletic director and head football coach Kyle Davis looked on.
"I can't wait to start playing in college because this is something I have wanted for a long time and the chance to play college football and get an education at the same time is a great one," Stephens said.
Waldorf is a four-year private college in Forest City, Iowa.
For Darrell Stephens Sr. it is a dream come true.
"This is the dream of any father and I am so proud of him," Stephens Sr. said. "He has been through a lot in his career here and I would love to thank the coach Davis and (ECHS principal) Kyle Ferguson for all they have done for my son. They have pushed him hard on the field and in the classroom and I thank them for that."
Stephens' scholarship is a full scholarship and he will not have to pay for tuition or books while at Waldorf.
Davis said he is proud of Stephens and knows he will do well.
"I think this is a great opportunity for him and he deserved every bit of it," he said. "He is a very easy guy to coach and he is a good student, so I know he will help Waldorf be successful in his time there.
