Back to school for Alabama students
Escambia County Alabama schools will be back in session beginning Thursday, Aug.10. See page 2A for more details.
Private schools in Atmore will also be returning to the classroom and will be featured in the Sunday edition of The Advance.
Rachel Patterson open house Aug. 9
Rachel Patterson Elementary School will hold open house/meet &greet on Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. for first and second grade students and parents. Students can bring their school supplies at this time. Parents are encouraged to join our PTO at this time.
Kindergarten orientation will be held Aug. 10, at 9:30 a.m. This is a full day for first and second graders. Kindergarten students will meet their teachers at this time. The first full day of school for kindergarten is Aug. 11.
Parents of new students are encouraged to register their children for the new school year as soon as possible. Appropriate papers, such as Social Security card, copy of the student's birth certificate, and immunization record are required.
Friendship club to meet Aug. 10
The McCullough Friendship Club will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10 at David's Catfish House.
Anyone who attended McCullough School is welcome to attend.
Benefit for injured Walnut Hill man
A benefit will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Aug. 12 at the Walnut Hill, Fla. Ruritan Club for Melvin Lutzi.
Lutzi fell from a roof he was working on and fractured four of his vertebrae.
There will be fish and chicken served.
VFW Friday night dances resume
Friday night dances at the VFW will resume this Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
Dance music will be provided by the Exit 54 Band, a new variety band providing good dance music at a modest entrance fee of $5 per person.
The VFW is located at 206 West Ashley Street in Atmore.
Jubilee Trio to sing at Dry Springs
Dry Springs Community Church in Walnut Hill, Fla., is hosting a gospel singing at 6 p.m. Aug. 12 featuring the Jubilee Trio.
Diabetic group to meet Aug. 15 at ACH
Atmore Community Hospital is hosting a free Diabetic Education Group Meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 15, 2006 in the hospital auditorium. The topic Diabetic Foot Screening and Diabetic Footwear will be presented by Shane White, PT., and Norman Gholston.
Gospel Singers to celebrate Aug. 11
The J. D. Gospel Singers of Uriah will be celebrating their anniversary beginning Friday, Aug. 11 and will climax on Sunday, Aug. 13.
Friday night services will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at St. Paul Baptist Church of Uriah.
The Saturday night services will be held at Grove Hill Baptist Church of Uriah with services beginning at 7 p.m.
Sunday services will be held at St. Paul Baptist Church beginning at 2 p.m.
County commission
to meet Aug. 14
The Escambia County Commission will conduct a regular session on Monday, Aug. 14 at 9 a.m. in the County Commission Chambers, Room 201 at the Escambia County Court House in Brewton.
Donations needed at Christian Care
Atmore Area Christian Care gave food to 50 people last week. They are in need of the following items to help restock the pantry: assorted canned fruits, pork and beans, self-rising flour, self-rising meal, tuna, salmon, chicken and dumplings, canned yams, cooking oil, jell-o and Treet.
Items can be dropped off at the office located behind the post office Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon.
Activities offered at the VFW Post 7016
Atmore VFW Post 7016 will resume Friday night dances beginning Friday, Aug. 11 from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
The post will continue Saturday morning fellowships with coffee and doughnuts at 9 a.m.; except for a full breakfast for post members and spouses the first Saturday morning of the month from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m.
Bingo will also be played every Monday night from 6 pm. until 8 p.m., except for the first Monday night of the month.
Supper will be held the last Monday of the month for all bingo participants.
These activities are not solely for VFW members. Anyone is invited to join the veterans in the fun.
