That first victory of the season is always a big one. The Escambia County Lady Blue Devils volleyball team experienced that win in their first match of the season as they defeated the Lady Hurricanes of Flomaton 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 17-25, 15-12 Thursday in Atmore.
"The amazing thing is we won this with an almost brand new team because we only have four returning players," ECHS head coach Todd Reynolds said. "I was pleased with how they stayed in the match after losing the first set. Then they took control in the final set as they did not give up the lead at all in that set."
Reynolds said ECHS (1-0) received a lot of power from the frontcourt of Tatiana Jennings and Courtney English.
"They really challenged the net well," he said. "Tatiana was calling the ball and taking the spikes when they came and I love to see when the girls call the ball and make the other team eat it."
The Lady Devils may have won the match, but Reynolds said there is still some aspects of the game he would like to work on with his team.
"We need to work on our teamwork," he said. "We have basically all new girls and we need to get them to feel comfortable with each other and I believe we really have players buying into their roles, which is a good thing."
The Lady Blue host Mobile Christian Aug. 29, beginning at 5 p.m.
